School life never got so interesting..., chapter 1
Kate adjusted the black messenger bag hanging from her shoulder, staring up at the large building. Girls were milling in and out of the huge entrance doors. She glanced at the building behind her, the boy's building, and sighed. Moving forward, her pink penguin vans stepped into dusty dry mud. The white soles were instantly stained. Maybe Mum was right - she shouldn't have worn her favourite shoes to school. Ah well, they'd clean. She continued walking carefully, glancing round every so often. Where was Lizzie? She said she'd be here.
Suddenly, Kate heard someone coming up behind her, panting and running fast.
"Hey... Hey..." the person breathed.
She knew that voice. Turning around, she saw Lizzie standing there, red in the face from running, fixing her dark hair. Her green striped top, three quarter lengths, stripy socks and jet black converse were a pleasant change from all the pinks and heart designs and flowery emroidery most of the other girls were wearing. Kate stared down at herself. She wished she had the money to buy clothes like Lizzie's. The Vans took up nearly all her Christmas money last year. She had on her black Pink Panther tee and black cut offs with black and white stripy socks she'd taken off and put back on at least four times that morning, still unsure about them. She didn't look her best for her first day at the new school. Especially as the cold September winds had blown her boring light brown hair about wildly.
Still, it wasn't a fashion show. That's what she kept telling herself.
"Hey, you aren't nervous are you?" asked Lizzie, nudging her and peering into her face.
"Me? Nervous? You've got to be kidding me," said Kate, but her tone of voice told Lizzie she wasn't telling the truth.
"Mm, well, don't worry. I'll stick with ya," Lizzie replied, smiling.
"Oi, who's the new kid?" a horribly screechy voice... well... screeched.
"Who's that?" asked Kate worriedly.
"Oh, ignore her. That's just Kim. Ugly, isn't she? And that's her best friend Rachel Bates. They're both cows," said Lizzie casually.
"Oh... oh, right." Kate clasped her hands together, her nails digging into her palm. She was too worried to notice. Already she'd been informed that two ugly girls were cows.
"I asked Mrs Drew, she's the head of lower school, if we could be put in the same form. She's not such a bad old stick. But Mrs. Crowley, and that's Cr-OW-ley, as in ouch. We all reckon she still keeps a cane in her desk."
"Oh, thanks, Lizzie, for asking if I can be put in the form with the evil teacher," said Kate, grinning.
Lizzie laughed.
"They're all evil!" She made strangling movements with her arms. Then she stopped outside a door and Kate stood behind her. "Here we are." Lizzie pushed open the door, walked in confidently, and Kate trailed behind her.
There weren't many people in the room yet. Just a few boys poring over some car magazine at the back and a few sad girls with long fat plaits in and dolly shoes with woolly socks at the front.
Mrs Crowley looked up from her desk. Kate was taken aback. She was expecting some old woman with grey hair in a straggly bun with owl specs and a taught face. This woman was young and blonde and thin. She didn't look evil.
"Hello..." Mrs Crowley said slowly, placing her pen down on the desk. Kate glanced at the drawers on her desk. Could there really be a cane in there?
"You must be... Katy," she said. Kate shuddered.
"Actually, Mrs Crowley, she prefers Kate," said Lizzie.
"Oh," Mrs Crowley replied, "I'm sorry about that. Well, why don't you take a seat while we wait for the rest of the class to arrive?"
Lizzie took Kate by the arm and pulled her along to two empty seats at the back of the class.
"See? Evil!" Lizzie hissed, as soon as they were sat down.
"She didn't seem that bad!" Kate replied.
"Ohhh, she is!"
Suddenly, the door flung open and Kim, followed by Rachel, sauntered in.
"Hello, Miss!" Kim lisped. The two giggly girls sat at a twin desk in the middle of the class and turned their chairs to face each other.
Lizzie and Kate looked at each other, and bit their bottom lips to stop themselves from laughing.
