School life never got so interesting..., chapter 2

"Well, that was a complete waste of time," Kate mumbled, pulling her bag from her broken locker.

"It'll get better," said Lizzie, who was standing beside her. She patted her shoulder, "Come on, let's get out of here. We can go the long way round and drop in at Cobweb's.

Cobweb's was a tiny music shop in the village. It sold all sorts and was a lot cheaper than places like HMV. Kate cheered up considerably.

"Sounds good," she smiled.

Kate slammed her dodgy locker shut and hitched her bag up.

"Let's go," said Lizzie. They walked out of the school, turning left to go into the village instead of right to go home.

Arriving at Cobwebs, Mark behind the counter grinned at them. He was youngish, just out of school. He had shoulder length tousled black hair that always flopped into his blue eyes.

"Remember Rachel Bates? She fancies Mark," Lizzie whispered.

"Hi, Chicken Pies," said Mark, brushing his hair out of his eyes, "What can I do for ya?"

"We're just looking," Kate answered, "Actually, have you got hold of Insomniac yet?"

Kate had every Green Day album - except Insomniac. She just couldn't find it anywhere.

"'Fraid not, Chick, but I've got something even better! Check this out!" said Mark. He ducked his head under the desk for a moment, then came back up with two flyers. He handed one each to Lizzie and Kate who blinked down at them.

"Green Day-" Lizzie began.

"Are coming-" Kate continued.

"Here!" they yelled in unison.

"Yes, yes they are," said Mark, trying to sound serious, but failing and breaking out in a huge smile.

"That's brilliant!" said Kate excitedly.

"Amazing!" Lizzie was jumping up and down by now.

"Woah, calm down, Chicks. This thing isn't free. You still need to come up with ticket money if you wanna see them, and they'll be here soon," said Mark.

"Yeah, well, I... I think I could come up with some money," Kate replied uneasily, thinking of her pocket money. Her eyes darted to ticket prices. It was pretty expensive. "I get a fiver a week, and they're coming in about a month. That's like twenty quid, I guess.. What about you, Liz?"

"I don't know. I suppose if I begged my parents they'd lend me the money. Or, Christmas is coming up! It could be an early present!" said Lizzie.

"Right!"

Mark raised his eyebrows.

"They're forty pounds each, mind you," he said.

"Yeah, but you'll fob us a few fivers, won't you, Mark?" Lizzie asked hopefully.

"Mm, I dunno, Chicks, you owe a lot already..."

It was true. Kate and Lizzie were always borrowing off Mark when buying music. He was always asking when they were going to pay him back. They always answered, "Soon."

"Oh, go on! Please! We need that money!" Kate begged.

Mark sighed.

"Look, I'll give you a fiver each but that's it!" he said.

"Thanks, Mark," said Lizzie.

"Yeah, thanks, you're a real mate, you are," said Kate.

"And if YOU two were real mates you'd get that money back to me! But I suppose just this once you can have a bit of money towards those tickets ... After all, it'd be your first Green Day concert and I'd be glad to be a part of that."

He handed them each a fiver. Lizzie gave him a quick hug.

"We'll pay you back, Mark!" she said, moving towards the door.

"Promise!" said Kate, and they both rushed out of the door. "Green Day! Coming HERE! Imagine!" said Kate, pocketing her flyer with the money wrapped inside.

"Yeah, I know. I just hope my parents let me go," Lizzie replied.

"Me too." Kate glanced at her Hell Bunny watch, "Damn, I'm late! I'd better get home! I'll see you tomorrow, Lizzie!"

"Bye!" said Lizzie.

On her way home, Kate took out the flyer again, just staring at it.

She and Lizzie were going to that concert, no matter what...
