Are You Afraid Of The Dark?, chapter 7

Billie Joe, Mike and Tré scrambled to get downstairs and they slammed the door to the basement shut as soon as they were inside. Jane quickly cleared away the empty beer bottles that they'd been drinking from and jumped when the doorbell sounded. She walked calmly to the door and opened it sighing with relief.
"Hey you ok?" It was Amy. Amy was her best friend. Her best friend who scared the shit out of her.

"Er yeah... I just thought you were someone else."

"Who?"

"It doesn't matter."

"Oh, well I just thought I'd drop by and say hi, I hardly see you these days."

"Yeah, I know. Well, goodnight!" Jane apologised to Amy mentally over and over in her head. Sarah could be home any second and she needed to make sure the guys were tied up. She was about to shut the door but Amy stopped her.

"Are you sure you're ok?"

"Yeah, just a little stressed. And I'm feeling a bit ill."

"Oh... " Amy sounded unsure of whether to believe her best friend. "Well I hope you get better. Has Sarah found a job yet?"

"In a manner of speaking... " Amy frowned.

"Right... I'll see you soon. Make sure you get better. And don't do anything for that lazy cow this weekend. She can do something for once." Jane smiled weakly and watched Amy walk over to her car. She waved her off before shutting the door and resting back on it sighing with relief. Her heart was yet to slow down. But she had to work quickly. Sarah could return any second.

She sprinted over to the basement, opened the door and jogged down the stairs two at a time. She flicked on the light and saw Billie Joe tying gags round Mike and Tré's mouths. "You're a star," she smiled at him and he grinned back. He sat down in the chair and she tied him up.

"I take it that wasn't your sister then?" he asked.

"No, but she's gonna be home any second. It scared the shit out of me though."

"Same here... same here."

"I'll come down tomorrow ok?" she said as she tied the gag around Billie's mouth. The guys nodded and she looked at them sadly. "Goodnight," she bit her lip and turned away, slowly making her way upstairs.

Thirty minutes later there was a click as a key turned in the front door. Sarah strolled into the house and sat down on the sofa next to Jane. "Hey," she said.

"Hi," Jane replied, "have good time with your friends?" she asked.

"Friends?" Sarah asked confusedly.

"Yeah you said you were gonna see some friends in Manhattan right?"

"Oh yeah! My mind went totally blank; I've got some things on my mind... " I bet you have... thought Jane.

"Oh right, care to share?" Jane asked.

"No... no it's ok, nothing big."

"You should really get a job soon. It's the only way you'll be able to pay for uni."

"I can't get a job if I don't go to uni though."

"Sarah, I had a job when I was sixteen! I didn't even have A levels! I only had two GCSEs! And that was only 'cause I took them early! Don't give me that shit about not having a degree. Mum and Dad were willing to pay but you couldn't even get yourself into college!"

"What flew up your ass and died?" Sarah asked resentfully.

"I'll tell you what. It's the fact that I've supported you for seven years! You don't help around the house, you don't even try to get a job, you leave everything to me! When was the last time you did any form of housework? When was the last time you helped me get the shopping in? When was the last time you got me a drink? But the last time I did any form of housework was today! The last time I got the shopping in was Wednesday evening! The last time I got you a drink was before you left to go to Manhattan! I'm sick of it Sarah! I pay for the house, the cars, the food, hell I even pay for your clothes and for you to go out to the cinema! Tell me how that's fair!" Jane had snapped. Everything that Billie Joe had said earlier made her see that she shouldn't have to put up with this.

Downstairs Billie Joe was smiling behind his gag. He heard every word she was saying. And he was proud of her. He knew she was getting run down by all the work she had to do, and now it would stop. Hopefully.

"I can't believe you said that!" Sarah said disbelievingly, "I'm your sister!"

"And I'm yours! You think you'd try and do something to make my work a bit easier while you're sitting around watching TV all day!!!"

"I don't just watch TV!"

"What do you do then?"

"I... I go shopping!"

"Yeah with my money! All you do is spend the money that I work so hard for! If I wasn't constantly supporting you I'd have paid for the whole house by now!"

"I can't believe I'm hearing this... " Sarah said.

"Yeah well wake up and smell the coffee. That I always make because you're too fucking lazy!" Sarah stomped upstairs and Jane heard her bedroom door slam.

Tré and Mike's eyes were wide while Billie Joe was grinning behind his gag. Nice one he thought.

Jane pressed the button on the remote a little harder than she intended to and the TV flicked onto MTV. She tried pressing the button again but it was stuck. "And I thought things couldn't get any worse... " Good Charlotte's new video appeared on the TV. "I spoke to soon... " she walked out of the lounge to retrieve a knife from the kitchen and tried to prise the button back up.

Finally it came unstuck just as the video finished. Boulevard of Broken Dreams came on the TV and Jane marvelled at how different the guys looked on TV. Billie Joe and Tré were still wearing eyeliner; they said people thought they looked really tired without it. But then Mike was adamant that they just liked to wear make up. What really made them seem different, was the fact that they were all wearing just normal clothes. No suits, no ties, no creepers. Billie Joe for example, he was wearing black chucks, some beige shorts and a pinhead gunpowder t-shirt. He just looked like a normal guy. Mike was wearing jeans and a plain white t shirt and Tré, he was wearing chequered shorts and a Hawaiian shirt! I bet he's the only one who can actually pull that off... thought Jane. She smiled to herself before switching off the TV and making her way upstairs to bed.

As she pulled her duvet tight around her Jane began to think. Tomorrow's their last day and then I have to let them go... I promised. She felt guilty about feeling sad that they'd be going. Despite all the stress and extra work she'd loved them being there. Of course she didn't know how serious her sister was. And how much danger she was actually in.
