Burlesque and the Art of the Teese

So, Kurtni got me interested in Dita Von Teese. I've seen some good photos of her, and I decided to buy her book. And I wasn't disappointed. Just from the words she used, and her knowledge of burlesque shows that she enjoys what she does. I don't usually expect people who do what she does to be particularly smart. But now I find myself contradicted. I don't think someone fitting the "dumb model" stereotype could write a book nearly as good as Dita's.

The book is filled with some of her best photos. Fitted with corsets and stockings, and lips painted cherry red, she looks like an image from the '30s, albeit, in color. She describes how she plans out her shows, her inspiration, and how those beautiful costumes are made.

But the book isn't necessarily about her. It details the history of burlesque, from the '20s to the '50s, and the new burlesque. It does, however have some more autobiographical parts. She talks about the inspiration she got from old movies, getting her first bra, and all in all, how she brought back burlesque.

If you like Dita Von Teese, read it. If you like burlesque, read it. If you just like nostalgic imagery, read it. It's a very good book, and also has a flipside: Fetish and the Art of the Teese. Read both sides, look at the pictures, and read it again.
