Just like heaven

"Show me how you do that trick
The one that makes me scream" she said
"The one that makes me laugh" she said
And threw her arms around my neck
"Show me how you do it
And I promise you I promise that
I'll run away with you
I'll run away with you"

Most of you probably recognized who this song is by. The Cure.
No words can ever explain the beauty of their songs, the harmony, the passion, the feeling they give, the atmosphere they create. Yet this blog is intended to try to do exactly that. I want to write about the beauty of their music, what makes it special to me, and why I can’t live without them.

There are a couple of things that make them special to me and opened their way to my heart.

The Lyrics

Spinning on that dizzy edge
I kissed her face and kissed her head
And dreamed of all the different ways I had
To make her glow
"Why are you so far away?" she said
"Why won't you ever know that I'm in love with you
That I'm in love with you"

It’s hard to explain what impact lyrics have on me without listening to them, because words sometimes lose their intensity without the music. There are many bands who write a lot of amazing lyrics and touch me deep inside. Yet the choice of words, swimming in the melody of the songs, perfectly fitting in the rhythm of the beat: I think all that is an art. In difference to other bands, The Cure have the ability to touch me with their words without making me relate to them. There doesn’t need to be a rhyme, in connection with music it fits perfectly, as if it’s the most natural thing in this world.

You
Soft and only
You
Lost and lonely
You
Strange as angels
Dancing in the deepest oceans
Twisting in the water
You're just like a dream

The voice

The Cure has gone though a lot of changes, but there is one thing that has always and will always stay the same: Robert Smith and his amazing voice. There might be better singers than him in this world, but there is something about his voice that makes me shiver. I also love his accent. His voice is very calm in slow songs, almost meditative; and in danceable songs it’s really energetic. I have to admit, GSB, I’ve fallen for his voice.

you may have a listen here

The melody

We move like cagey tigers
We couldn't get closer than this
The way we walk
The way we talk
The way we stalk
The way we kiss
We slip through the streets
While everyone sleeps
Getting bigger and sleeker
And wider and brighter
We bite and scratch and scream all night
Let's go and throw
All the songs we know...

The sound of The Cure has changed throughout the years. There has been times when the music was rather dark, and there has been times when the songs were really joyful in melody. What The Cure is really good at, is even putting a joyful melody together with thoughtful lyrics. The melodies are hard to get out of your head. I love to sing along and dance to The Cure. I love to get drown into their music.

The Live Experience

You're so gorgeous i'll do anything!
I'll kiss you from your feet
To where your head begins!
You're so perfect!
You're so right as rain!
You make me make me make me
Make me hungry again

In February, 2008, I was one of those blessed people who got to see The Cure live on tour. It’s really hard to explain but there is something about the concerts that’s just magical. I have been to tons of concerts but I can’t compare this to anything I’ve ever been to. It's not the fact that The Cure played almost 4 hours. There was this atmosphere that I can’t even put into words. It felt as if the whole world is in peace, as if everything has finally fallen into place. It felt as if the whole world has been waiting for nothing but this. There was this incredible magic in the air. I was enchanted. And I still am. Like I said, it’s hard to explain what I felt, you have to feel it yourself to understand it.

Feel the magic

I'll run around in circles
'Til i run out of breath
I'll eat you all up
Or i'll just hug you to death
You're so wonderful!
Too good to be true!
You make me
Make me hungry for you

I could write a million words about that band. I could add more and more categories. The Cure has been a band for many, many years. I grew up with them, and I still have them around. The day I finally got to see them live was one of the happiest days in my life. However down I may feel, their music always puts a smile in my face, it lets me escape my problems for a while and drown into this world of complete harmony. It sounds so cheesy, and if Robert Smith ever read this he’s laugh at me, but that’s just what I am.

I have to add, GSB, I’m not one of those fans who knows everything about their band, heck I don’t even know all of their songs. I can call 6 The Cure albums and 2 DVDs my own. That’s by far not all they have produced. But this small collection is enough to conquer my heart and to earn a special place in my heart. It’s not one of those bands you listen to 24/7. But it’s one of those bands whose music you listen to at special moods, special occasions. It’s not just a band you like, it’s the special band you like. Their CDs are a treasure in your CD collection.

Well, I better stop now or I’ll write 10 more pages on why I love them.
I'm sure all of you feel that passionate about a band and I’d love to hear about it.

Thank you.
