Punk.
Too many times I've heard common misconceptions to the phrase "Punk". People associate being "punk" with being unique, different, and being yourself. First of all, if being punk was being yourself, there wouldn't be a phrase for it. "Punk" would just be known as "being yourself". Anyway, this blog is just to clear up those misconceptions once and for all, although I know half the GSBians on this site won't even read this.
In essence, to be punk is to do something for the first time. To start a new wave is to be punk. To fight against a bigger community for a greater cause is punk. To go to Hot Topic and get a Green Day shirt and some black pants is not punk. Annoying your family for no reason is not punk. Hating and rebelling against your teachers for no reason is not punk. Basically what I'm trying to say is:
What punk is today is not punk.
Activism is pretty a more globally known form of punk. Punks are just teenagers who follow activism. Instances of true punk being shown globally include:
The Haymarket riot, 1886, a violent labor protest led by the Anarchist Movement
Martin Luther King's 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, a key moment in the Civil Rights Movement
The Stonewall riots in 1969 protesting the treatment of homosexuals in New York City
The Tiananmen Square protests of 1989
The many ACT-UP AIDS protests of the late 80's and early 90's
The Seattle WTO Ministerial Conference of 1999 protest activity against the World Trade Organization
Anti-globalization Protests in Prague in 2000
Serbia in 2000

People claim to be punk when they aren't. They claim to be punk because their favourite band is Green Day and they wear converse. NOT punk.
I don't know for sure what punk is, but I know that if you claim to be "punk" its not punk. But, you sure explained this clearly.
Standing up for what you believe in, sort of.

I concur.
Punk isn't telling your teachers to get f*cked.
Punk isn't wearing black and red.
Punk isn't flipping people off just because they stare at you.
Punk is about standing up for what you believe in and doing what you want. At least that's what I think
Well said, anyways.

..Maybe not. ..But I started it. :) ....And people think I'm crazy for doing it.

First: Punk its nothing because thats exactly what it means punk is not being label stereotyped or even recognized to the system. In simpler words punk is nothing to the system because punks dont want to be into the system. Someone that wants to be punk will never be punk.
So punk is being nothing to the system, not giving a sh*t. Most of those "punk" bands out there aint punk because they all claim to be punk
A punk band is like the ramones they didnt wanted to be punk man, they just wanted to be them. Crass was never more punk than when they admitted punk is dead. I mean "movements are systems and systems kill"
In the end punk existed just BEFORE it was "punk" because punk its nothing
Second "To go to Hot Topic and get a Green Day shirt and some black pants is not punk. Annoying your family for no reason is not punk. Hating and rebelling against your teachers for no reason is not punk. Basically what I'm trying to say is:
What punk is today is not punk."
That is SO f*ckING truth man
and Punk EXISTED before it was "PUNK"
Dumbfuck, March 25th, 2007 at 05:48:36pm
Man, that's true. I mean there's so many stereotypes and labels now a days that I'm not even sure "Punk" ever existed. But yea, I get what you're saying and I agree. So many people have made it into a stereotype that it's hard to tell what it really is... but I guess I agree with this definition.

Who cares anymore. I don't think Punk ever exsisted in the first place. I'm not saying you're wrong but I'm not saying you're right.
