How do you feel about at-will states?
In an At-will state you can fire a person for any reason you like.
I live in Michigan, here you can fire a person for wearing black shoes if you'd like.
So I believe it also includes sexual orientation, clothes..really anything.

I personally think it's not really fair I mean really if you like dye your hair
from blonde to black your boss can fire you so I don't like it.

well, yea, i thinks its stupid too. in history my teacher was having a convo about the glass wall, and its this wall in places were certain people cant make it all the way to the top because they bump into the glass wall, whether their a woman, gay, black, aisian, w/e. theres many reasons.

the reason its a "glass" wall is because when you get fired, you dont always know what its for, and thats the thing. you dont know what the wall is, because you cant see it.

but its very controversial. a boss is a boss, and if he wants to fire someone, thens o be it. even if a state isnt at will, people can still find ways to fire gays or w/e, and get away with. or rather, not just hire them at all.

in a sense it goes against someones freedom of speech. i mean, this is definatly a great debate, i love you! because it might now be even just minorites, or gays or w/e, but it could be like a nazi. i wouldnt want a extremist nazi working for me, because reminder, not all nazis were bad. its only a socialist party, just like any other, and they got labeled. its someone personal opinion, thats free speech. so it goes both ways.

Well, on one hand, no, a boss should not get to fire a person for whatever reason they like. But it is just as bad in the states where nobody can be fired, because then it's 'age discrimination', or 'wrongful termination', or 'he just fired me because he's a dick' for anybody who gets fired. Should someone who gets fired because they are not able to do their job properly really be able to recieve benefits for incompetance just because they are, say, over the edge of fifty? It really just comes down to the good will of man-kind, which is virtually non-existent in the workforce, so.... either way you're screwed.

that was just a really long way of saying 'i don't know'.

they have that right
but the thing with rights like freedom of speech and and freedom to just fire some one...is that it requires personal responsibility

I'm allowed to run down the streets saying "all blacks and queers should die!!!!"
but I'd get my ass kicked...so if I do think it, I should keep it to myself

it takes a nut to spot one, jk.

really, if you get fired because your black, gay, asain, old, w/e. then you shouldnt want to work for that person, unless you never saw them at all and it was good pay, which actually happens a considerable amount of times. but then again, if your going to fire someone because they're different, whats the point of interviews and not letting them work there in the first place..

I think you should only be able to fire someone for a work related reason, like they're crap at their job or something, not because of who they are or what they look like.

it's a moral thing, the government shouldn't meddle in moral right and wrong

I guess. I still think it's wrong to fire someone simply because they were gay or something.
If them being gay was afecting their job, then i'd understand

People should only be fired if they deserve to be fired, not just because of their skin colour, sexual orientation, clothing choice etc.

Employers should simply want the person who is best suited for the position in question.

Unfortuantely it isn't just the employers own personal preferences on this chacteristics which choose who holds a position. for example, if you have a community of people who are mostly caucasians and then the local supermarket employees a negroid as a checkout personal you would be surprised how many people would avoid going through that register simply because of the persons skin colour.

therefore it is the community as a whole who needs to get over these things, a employer would want to do what is going to be the best for his or her business and sometimes this means firing someone because of their sexual orientation, clothing choice etc or not hiring someone because of skin colour etc.
