I'm rather surprised no one has created a topic such as this, already. This is an extremely big issue, right now.

I said a word or two about it on a different thread:

Quote
I have HAD IT with the government's handling of the situation in Louisiana and Mississippi. How many GSBians here think that if these were rich white people, they would have been rescued two days ago? The place is a fucking disaster on a massive scale, and where the hell are the personnel and supplies and money this nation needs to help these people? In Iraq.

Thanks George Bush. I knew this was coming...just one large natural disaster and the Gulf Coast looks like a third world country. It serves you right, but the people dying in the streets of New Orleans should not have to suffer because you've ruined the country.

Now, it's your turn. What should we be doing to help? How do you feel about the efforts (or lack thereof) being made to rescue the victims?

I wanted to do a thread on this. It is a major issue at the time. Many people have died and the help is appreciated. Yes, they may be rich people helping but if these people would stop bitching about not getting help fast enough and blah blah, they would get the help they need. My school is going to be donating money and I want to do what I can to help. It'll take a lot.

you seem eager to blame this all on George Bush, i doubt rich white poeple would have been rescued more significantly because we simpley werent prepared for it. i mean maybe rich people would pay more money to the funds but i doubt george bush would do anything differently. so this natural disaster is a direct result of george Bush ruining the country?

The people don't deserve help......well little kids and decrepit old people do.....but everyone else gets what they deserve for living in a place that they know will be fucked up yearly......you still have to give them help though...and the bush administration waited an entire day before doing anything at all....the people should stop complaining about not getting help fast enough though....the ones complaining are still able to do things...and are in good health....maybe just hungry and thirsty....so instead of complaining about how they don't have help.....maybe they should help the ones who are now even lower than them....the ones that need medical attention...or help with rescue efforts....that way the whole process will be sped up and their problems can be solved quicker.
The people who were affected deserve what happens is still what i think no matter what...they are idiots...and idiots will do stupid things.....like build a large city in an area that gets hurricanes yearly...
a bigger conern is gas prices...they are ridiculous....the jump was more price gouging...which has been happening for years....gas was about a dollar a gallon....and greed got that raised to over 2 and a half dollars! now because they can...and are greedy...they have gotten over 6 dollars in some places.....it's ridiculous....before the hurricane hit the us was getting a LOT more oil than what was needed for the us....but instead we get imported oil so they can jack the prices up....and now....they use the temporary loss of some oil as an excuse to jack up the prices again. im done with this now but know that i do have sympathy for peoples deaths...that is always a sad thing...however the recent hundreds of thousands of homeless people deserve it.

No. How stupid do you think I am? The Bush administration did not cause this hurricane. But the efforts to deal with the aftermath are pathetic, partially because that's the way corrupt, uncaring administrations handle everything, but also because he drained this nation of it's resources, and is currently wasting them all in a pointless war. You don't send the national guard overseas, we need them over here for situations just like this one. You don't spend money on a war if that means leaving this country with minus zero dollars to pay for the rescue and clean up.

Think about it this way. If you could afford to put away a certain amount of money in case someone gets hurt, or your car breaks down, wouldn't you do that? I think most people with common sense would do so, but then, George Bush isn't known for having much in the way of common sense.

I have a strong desire to toss you into one of the many flooded streets in New Orleans, and watch you swim through raw sewage and dead bodies.
Are you saying these people should be left there to die because they happen to live in Louisiana, or Mississippi? You disgust me. Most of them are poor, and probably have little choice about were they live, anyway.
You say that they should stop complaining, and help the others. Well, that's what many of them ARE doing, but there's only so much they can do. Wow.
Well I bet it's a lot different for Americans, actually being there and all. I'm English, for me I only hear about it on the news.
But that is an amazing point and it's really made me think.
It's a natural disaster, so it's no-one's fault, but surely there's something someone could do?? I don't know what, but come on, the rulers of the world are (mostly) clever, surely they could think of a way to help, even if it's only a little??

I haven't been watching the news too much lately, but I asked my parents what Bush was doing to help the people effected by the hurricane and their answer was "Basically nothing." Which is awful. I would've thought that the USA had enough money to be able to deal with a disaster like this, but I suppose because or the war in Iraq, it doesn't have enough money for it, which is completley stupid. Shouldn't there be some money that the US government keeps in case of disasters like this? I also heard that there are people trapped in a stadium or something in New Orleans, and there was a helicopter trying to airlift people out, but some people started shooting at the helicopter, so it left. Confused I don't know if thats true or not.

I don't actually see why there is so little aid and help going in, and yet when you turn on the news channels here (in England) they've managed to get their new crew out there to report it.
Isn't that getting priorities a little mixed up?

The people don't deserve anything. That is why it is a bigger concern about the price of oil to me. Things like this make me laugh......the loss of lives however does saden me...and i feel bad for people dying...and people losing people that they love....but still...they brought it on themselves.

I was watching CNN with my dad again, and the Astrodome was holding too much so now they have to be carried to other shelters, in 3 others places. Do you know how much ppl there is that needs help badly?? And they were filming the distrction did to some of the places and as they passed by, there was this floating read thing so then I asked my dad what it was and then I got freaked out and it was a floating dead body. These ppl are getting little help, and they need it fast.

New Orleans is quite a poor place right? So most of the people who live there probably can't afford to get themselves out of there. They probably live there because they don't have a choice about it.
So maybe, if people do give them money some of them can use it to get out of there. I don't know. But really, no one deserves these kind of things... that's a really stupid thing to say, because most people can't actually help their financial situation and things. They didn't bring it on themselves

None of you have even thought this through....you just think...people without houses....im sorry let me help....im not that way....my brain thinks about things a lot before i make my decisions on things.....yes...they were poor...but it isn't cheap to live in new orleans.....so poor there...is probably upper-middle somewhere else...so they could afford to move....and they should have....im saying they don't deserve people to help them find their stuff....and rebuild their houses.....they do need to be brought to safety....that is psychotic to just leave them there to die.....but....you realize without having anything most of these people will move back to their houes....think about that....why? why should we help people who are going back to get hit by more? that seems rather pointless....and will bring this country down even lower than it is...this has caused billions in dollars of losses....and is affecting everyone....and why? because people were stupid and decided to live in a horrible environment. so don't say you want to throw me in with the dead bodies....geez everyone on here likes to exaggerate everything.....im not some heartless crazy kid.....i do care about peoples lives....it's a horrible thing when people die. so don't think that i believe differantly.

Why is it that bush is doing more to stop the luters than to help the stranded and in need? people can claim possesions back on insurance...but you can get a life back.
