MTV2 - The Leak: Sum 41 "Underclass Hero"
Launched Tuesday, July 17th, 2007
Since the 2005 release of their last album, Chuck, Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley married fellow Canadian rocker Avril Lavigne. But it hasn't been all hearts and marital moonbeams since. While Whibley's managed the public scrutiny of a famous marriage with much aplomb, Sum 41's been busy weathering a perfect storm behind closed doors: the band dodged death by a whisker during a 2004 documentary shoot in the Congo. Soon after, they parted ways with their management company, and, most recently, it was announced that long-time member and guitarist Dave "Brownsound" Baksh was leaving the band. Plus, like a rotten cherry atop a bitter sundae, Chuck failed to meet the success of the band's previous albums. At this point, many bands would've tossed in the proverbial towel. Instead, Whibley, short one crucial band member, capitalized solely on his own strength and that of long-time members Cone McCaslin and Steve Jocz and cranked out Underclass Hero, the band's most mature album to date. Though the reflective album focuses primarily on the personal -- Whibley's absentee father, Baksh's exit from the band -- and the political -- flagrant condemnations of the Bush administration -- the band's lost none of their edge. Sum 41's trademark pissed-punk style isn't just apparent; their sound, like the band itself -- is tighter than ever. Skeptics, check your heads -- Sum 41's still all killer.
