And that credit goes to the guys of The Matches. During a recent interview with music-centered network Fuse, Green Day's Mike Dirnt called The Matches his No. 1 band of the moment. The group's response? "I'm not going to lie, 'Basket Case' was pretty much the reason I started playing guitar," frontman Shawn Harris said of one hit off Green Day's 1994 album "Dookie." "My dad played guitar and I thought, 'Oh my gosh, my dad has one of those things!' I grabbed it, put on a strap that was way too low and learned how to play the chords from that. "So, yes, knowing Mike Dirnt liked our band was a surreal experience." It's been nearly 10 years since the band - boasting Harris, drummer Matt Whalen, bass player Justin San Souci and guitarist Jon Devoto - was born in Oakland, Calif. The group's craftsmanship and pure energy eventually started the hype train. The majors took notice, and The Matches released its debut on Epitaph records in 2004. The disc, "E. Von Dahl Killed the Locals," was the band's paean to catchy three-chord vignettes and feel-good themes. In an industry of spiky-haired punk-wannabes, The Matches offered an honest mix of power-pop, with enough punk to please even old-school critics. ______________________________________________________ This is an example of one type of topics you should be making.
