Phil Hartman was the glue that held together SNL in the late 80's and early 90's. His characters included Unfroven Caveman Lawyer, Fank Senatra, Bill Clinton, and Eugen the Anal Retentive Chef.
He Started out in the Groundlings (a local comedy troupe in L.A.), where he built a strong friendship with Jon Lovitz and Paul "Pee-Wee Herman" Reubens. In 1980 he had his first movie role as a cameo in Cheech and Chong's Next Movie, and shortly after started in a stage show that his friend Paul Reubens had cooked up to show off his new character at the time, that was also in Cheech and Chong, the character was Pee-Wee Herman. Hartman played a gritty, unshaven sea captain with a gruff voice, that went by the name Captain Carl in the stage production called The Pee-Wee Herman Show, it opened at the Groundlings Theater and moved to The Roxy theater where it was filmed for an HBO specail in 1981. After the show closed, Phil played small roles here and there until, in 1983 Paul called on him and asked him to help him with the script for a movie based on his character. Phil played a small role in the film Pee-Wee's Big Adventure which was written by him and Paul.
In 1986 he reprised his role as Captian Carl for the TV show Pee-Wee Playhouse, but left after the first season to go on to do what he was best known for SNL he was on SNL from 1986-1994.
He Played many film roles in that time. He also voiced many difrent characters on The Simpson.
In 1995 he began playing the role of Bill McNeal on the sitcom Newsradio.
And in 1998 he provided voice of the character Jiji in the american dub of the Japanese film Kiki Delivery service.
He had gotten an offer from Matt Groening(creator of The Simpsons) to be the voice of Zapp Baranagin on Futurama, but never got the chance to.
In 1998 he was murdered by his wife in his sleep at the age of 49.
Kiki's Delivery Service was dedicated in his memory
all character he had played on The Simpsons were retired, and in his honor the character Fry's first name on Futurama is Philip
His chracter Bill McNeal on Newsradio died and was replaced by another character, one the characters kept a picture on his desk of him althrough the final season.
