I've looked all over for a Tomb Raider forum, but feel free to lock this if it's a dupe.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider

This forum is for all the games and the films, any characters or actors included in the series.

A tomb raider is, quite simply, a person who raids tombs. They are often archeologists, but some tomb raiders do what they do for fun. Lara, herself, is a tomb raider, but she is really filthy rich and doesn't raid tombs for the money, but for the mere thrill of adventure and discovery.

Lara Croft

Lara Croft, daughter of Lord Henshingly Croft, was born in England on February 14th 1968. She was raised to be an aristocrat from birth, and had lived in luxury aloof from the world at large. From the age of 3 Lara began her learning with a private tutor. Lara attended Wimbledon High School for girls at the age of 11.

At 16 her parents decided she should broaden her education by studying at Gordonstoun, one of England's most prominent boarding schools. One day Lara came across a copy of National Geographic on the hall table. The front cover featured a familiar name - Professor Werner Von Croy. A respected archaeologist, Von Croy had once lectured at Lara's school to pupils & parents alike.

The experience had a profound effect on Lara, triggering a desire for travel to remote locations in search of adventure. In some ways Von Croy had become an inspirational figure for Lara. As Lara read further, she learned that Von Croy was currently preparing for an archaeological tour across Asia, culminating in a potential new discovery to be made in Cambodia. Unable to pass up this opportunity, Lara burst into the room, thrust the article in front of her parents & without hesitation demanded she accompany Von Croy on his expedition.

Lord Croft could hardly disagree that travel was an education in itself. As Lara argued the case further, he found himself walking over to the desk & penning a letter to Von Croy. He Introduced himself as an influential society figure and offered financial assistance in exchange for his daughter's place on the expedition. Von Croy's reply assured the Henshingly Croft's that the territories were friendly and that he had ample experience to look after both his & Lara's well being.

Lara's company as an assistant would be welcome, as was the offer of such a generous cheque. He remembered Lara from his lecture - her incessant yet insightful questions had made quite an impression upon him. And so it was agreed by all that Lara would accompany Von Croy for the duration of the tour.

After attending a Swiss finishing school at the age of 21, Lara's marriage into wealth had seemed assured, until one day, on her way home from a skiing holiday, her chartered plane crashed deep into the heart of the Himalayan Mountains. Lara probably should have died there, as most people would have, instead she learned how to depend on her wits to stay alive in hostile conditions a world away from her sheltered upbringing.

Two weeks later when she walked into the village of Tokakeriby her experiences had had a profound effect on her and in that process transformed herself as well. Her Himalayan odyssey was both miraculous and enlightening, as the young woman not only survived, but gained a perspective on herself and the world that made her past appear shallow and naive. Out of the darkness of her ordeal, she saw her future reflected in a different light.

She felt profoundly that there was more for her in this life than the coddled existence that had become her numbing habit. She realized that she was only truly alive when she was travelling alone. Over the eight following years she acquired an intimate knowledge of ancient civilizations across the globe. Her family soon disowned their prodigal daughter, hoping she would wed The Earl of Farrington. She turned to writing to fund her trips.

Famed for discovering several ancient sites of profound archaeological interest and gaining some notoriety for having slain an actual Bigfoot in North America, she made a name for herself by publishing travel books & detailed journals of her exploits, later becoming a seeker of truth - both large and small - and in that pursuit she continues to this day.

This year is TR 10th anniversary.

In the beginning....

A lot can happen in 10 years, and believe me it really did. The Tomb Raider series went from strength to strength starting out as a series of games which later developed into two smash hit movies starring Angelina Jolie as the character we had grown to love. But how did it all begin? Well, the answer begins here, in 1998 when a small Derby based design company by the name of Core Design was first assembled by Mr. Jeremy Heath Smith.

The company focused on quality over quantity, slowly expanding their personnel and output of titles as the years passed. Core's first game was seen in 1989. It was a 2D adventure game with a male lead "Rick Dangerous". Rick was an archaeologist who explored the deadly tombs of a Mayan Temple. Battling with baddies to win the prize artefact... Sound familiar?

A few years later with the increase of technology making bigger and better games possible Jeremy called a meeting with his staff upon hearing news of a brand new games console - The Sony Playstation. The team sat down and started thinking of possible games that could make use of this "miracle machine". Toby Gard was one of the employees with a suggestion... A game called Tomb Raider was what he wanted to see on this new console. Gard had produced drawings of what he felt the game should look like, he explains how some of the other employees thought he was a bit crazy, however that's where the phenomenon known as Tomb Raider started.

"Toby stood up and said I've got this idea about doing a game based on pyramids", Says Jeremy Heath-Smith. "I've always wanted to do a game based around pyramids to. For some reason I really fancied this idea about pyramids with a Pharaoh, and having to go tunnel under the pyramids. It was just as silly as that. It didn't have characters, it was more just conceptually let's do a game based on pyramids".

1993 arrives and so does Tomb Raider...

Tomb Raider made its way to the drawing board in 1993. The design brief was for a cinematic adventure with elements of exploration, action and puzzle solving. All held together with a strong storyline. Gard decided that he didn't want the series to go down the route of other popular games at the time such as Doom. After all Tomb Raider isn't a shoot 'em up. This meant that the view was switched from 1st person to 3rd person allowing the player to see the character and what they do. Unfortunately the series stumbled at the very first hurdle. "Although Jeremy liked the idea, there were no programmers that would touch it. They all thought it was too difficult because at the time no one had done anything like it. Nobody in the company had done anything 3D. The whole idea was just terrifying to programmers". The project then faced another major hurdle... Who was the lead going to be?

Weeks of design work followed, but each design was always too similar to Indiana Jones. "The male lead was in for a few weeks. He didn't have a name but as soon as I saw him he got binned" says Jeremy. Gard started toying with the idea of the lead being a female character. "It wasn't necessarily going to be a female character, I designed a couple of characters. One was a girl and the other a bloke. My argument was always from watching people play Virtual Fighter. In an all bloke office nearly everyone was playing one of the female characters. It seemed to me that people were missing something if people weren't making characters female."

Toby and Core were taking a huge risk having the lead character of the Tomb Raider series a female one. It had been considered as commercial suicide. "There weren't any girls in videogames at all then. Sure there were a few single women figures but still no games that revolved completely around a heroine" says Jeremy. Deciding to take the dangerous option the Core team pressed the delete button on the male hero of Tomb Raider and focused on the female role.

Some Characters That Appear In The Games:

- Amanda Evert:

On the outside, Amanda Evert was a graduate student of social anthropology; on the inside, she was an intense chronicler of the metaphysical. She believed wholeheartedly that the common notion of reality is nothing but a thin, drab layer pulled over the infinite truth of the soul.

She studied every religious and mystical system in the world, past and present, and while still at university was already something of an expert on theology and mysticism. She had a pet theory that fragments of a single, long forgotten mystical belief system exist within the rites and rituals of shamanism, witchcraft and many religions.

Her dream was to rediscover this supreme knowledge from the past and teach it to people so they could gain spiritual enlightenment. At the time it seemed more like a youthful dalliance than a true obsession; something Lara considered harmless.

She was undoubtedly comfortable with exploring beyond the boundaries of scientific inquiry, but she was also a brilliant researcher who was still in touch with the modern world. She was young, a bit bookish, not too self-confident, and a bit of a hippy.

Her relationship with Lara is typified by playful philosophical banter; they disagreed, but they crossed intellectual swords without becoming exasperated or angry at the others' firm viewpoint.

Then one day in Peru, while excavating a tomb Lara believed contained the last queen of Tiwanaku, her team of graduate students breeched a new room and all hell broke loose.

Lara was the only one to return to the surface, where the team's structural engineer, Anaya Imanu, listened in horror to Lara's story of how a malevolent entity of some kind slaughtered everyone in the tomb, except for Lara and Amanda. But as the two tried to escape, Amanda set off a trap that sealed the room, brought down the roof, and drowned Amanda.

When players complete Tomb Raider Legend, they will be able to play through the game using the Amanda model!

Please note: Unlike popular belief, Lara Croft is British. Although the film is an American produce, the game company that made the TR series is still British.

I think that about wraps it up. If any of this is false, please tell me via pm or through this forum. And sorry if it’s a bit long. Very Happy

Does nobody on GSB like Tomb Raider? I thought at least you'd have a forum, so I was seriously surprised you didn't.

Anyway, I've got TR Legend on PSP and I can't seem to complete it, or more precisely complete the Cornwall level. The boss, the big evil snake thing, is impossible to defeat. However, I have completed the level w/o problem on The XBox 360, so I'm wondering if I have a bug or if it's worldwide.
