The Organisers of The Big Day Out concert in Sydney have decided to say no
to letting people bring in anything displaying the Australian flag, or the flag itself, into the concert.

The reason for this is because the organisers are afraid that any show of
the flag will spark memories and retaliation of the Cronulla riots which took part last year.

So, what are your opinions on this issue?
Should the flags be allowed, or dis-allowed?

Australia Day is on Friday this week, quite a time to ban the flag, ay?

The Cronulla riots were were a whole bunch of aussies went after the lebanese. They claimed that they were 'reclaiming the beach.'
..bullshit.

Personally, I don't think the Australian Flag would spark any retaliation and if it does, fucking watch out on Australia Day Rolling Eyes

Well the idea is to stop violence. Fair enough. Plus, flags at festivals are fucking irritating.

whatre gonna do?
wrap a flag around someone's head and suffocate them?

..i know what you mean.
people can get pretty stupid when they have their hands on a flag.
but seriously, why is the australian flag the only one getting banned?

because it's australia, so the majority of flags in ''attendance'' will be australian. I mean if flags were going to be banned at a british festival i doubt they'd bother banning the jamican one. XD

That's not the point behind it. It's patriotism. Having a big Australian flag is like saying "LOOK AT ME, I'M AN AUSTRALIAN" and just attracts trouble. A small scale example would be the guy who got onto his friend's shoulders at Download with a scottish flag and got bottled for his troubles. Fair enough it was in good humour, but you can see how it could easily become more violent.

I think banning a flag is a pretty idiotic way to prevent violence. "Oh, I don't see a flag, no riots for me". It's pointless.
