On the old GSB there was a possible meaning for this song claiming that it was based on an actual "86'd list" which George Bush was added to at the same time as Green Day.
Does anyone have more information about this list?

86 is about them being banned from Gilman Street.

I know its about Gilman, but on the old GSB it said that Gilman Street released a list known as the "86'd" list of people banned from shows.
That may just be a rumour about George Bush though

Why would George Bush be banned from Gilman Street? Well, maybe he is. But I don't see him every going there anyways.

It was probably a joke. But Green Day have been on the list since.. they signed to a major label.

i think this song is pretty sad, because it's horrible being rejected by people who used to be your friends. i don't know, maybe i'm too exaggerated but the phrase "and there's no return from 86" makes me think that the guys felt horrible and abandoned.
it's my point of view, anyway, =)

Also, to '86' something is to get rid of it - linking to them being banished from Gilman.

I have no idea where the phrase originated from, but I remember reading that it's a phrase that waiters use a lot in kitchens - 'a burger, 86 the onions'
