A bizarre wave of mob emo-bashings is sweeping across Mexico. The movement is being generated on message boards and social networking sites by non-emo youth who highly dislike like the emo look and attitude.

The spark came first in Queretaro on March 7. An estimated 800 young people poured into the city's Centro Historico hunting for emos to beat the crap out of. They found some. The next weekend it spread to Mexico City, where emos faced off against punks and rockabillies at the Glorieta de Insurgents, the epicenter of emo social space in the capital. There's also been reports of anti-emo violence in Durango, Colima, and elsewhere.

The question on everyone's lips right now seems to be, "What the hell is going on?"

Is it because of the open femininity? I've heard that Mexico is a very conservative country.

Thoughts?

I remember at Download Festival in 2006, I was wandering around the campsite and these two emo kids came running round the corner and past me, followed by a group of about 50 people who were all chasing them shouting stuff like "kill the emo's!"

It was just nasty stuff.

Today? No, not today. Just in general.

This used to be a big problem in the UK, still is to a varying degree now. Ever since the 50's, gangs have been at it in bitter street wars. Now a days, well, chav bashing is a common form of entertainment. And there has been quite a bit of news over the death of a young woman who was dressed as a goth in what appeared to be an otherwise random act of violence.

And clothing also used to indicate economic status giving clear distinction between the working and upper classes. The working and upper classes alike have been threatened by each other and resorted to violence.

well, i guess its a good thing they've got long legs(the emos that is). Black humour.
But its seriously demented on how people just judge you and go like "oh, well those dudes look like this so we should beat em up, so they'd know better next time". Its retarded. I mean, its none of their freakin business what some people look like, and i know, alot of punks are called emos, alot of goths are called emos and alot of metalheads are called emos.

Why? cause they have similar traits in looks. So i guess the punks and metalheads got pissed cause of that, or cause they think emos are wimpy little twits, which actually depends on the said person, whether they are a wimpy little twit or not, not 'cause they're emo.

If someone wears alot of black, maybe they just love the colour and thats all there is to it? and seriously, there's nothing wrong with wearing make-up(unless you've got so much it looks like it's starting to peel off, it looks bloody horrible). And i think its seriously demented to be inflexible towards gender roles. As in only women wearing make-up and certain colours, we should be more accepting than that, well, at least i thought most people actually are more accepting.

Why cant we all just get along?(impossible though)

tbh, I would say that chavs are more responsible for 'bashings' than victims of them. A generalisation, yes, but I think there are probably just more chavs, and to be really stereotypical (so shoot me), the average chav probably comes from an unfortunately deprived background. There is a serious problem with British society, definitely, as every newspaper or commentator is saying these days.

And yeah, in Lancashire (where I live, incidentally), Sophie Lancaster, a woman dressed in gothic clothing was beaten to death. Sick. It's heartbreaking. She was attacked so brutally that the paramedics who took her to hospital couldn't even tell what gender she was. I mean, how can people even do that? Such an unprovoked and extreme act of violence is worse than animalistic. It makes it even worse knowing that this is what happens where I live, knowing that Lancashire and England in general is full of such prejudice and violence, not just towards goths and emos, but towards everyone. ._.

Tbh, you can't even have a normal fringe without being called an emo anymore.

And speaking of Sophie Lancaster, people have been trying to get this sort of thing sorted in the wake of the tragedy. If you look here there's a petition to get the definition of 'hate crime' expanded to protect subcultural people in Britland. Unfortuantely the deadline has already passed but it got 6,952 signatures.

I signed that petition Con

I was just about to mention Sophie's case before I read what other people put.

It's disgusting. One of the people involved in her murder only got 6 years imprisonment, because he's 15 years old. In my eyes, all murderers should be treated exactly the same way, no matter what his age. I'm glad Sophie and Rob's attack got such wide media coverage. These things usually go unnoticed by the media. I live near where Sophie lived too, and some of my friends knew her. It's awful to think that someone could be driven to kill another person purely on the basis of their lifestyle choice.

Oh that happens a lot here too.
Here it's the skinheads who beat up emos, it happened to one of my friends. She was walking down the street alone and 5 or 6 skinheads beat her up.
All the punks, emos and metalheads, or in general people who dress in a "different" way, always meet in a park, but I know a lot of people who are too scared to go there because they don't want to be beaten up.

The violence aganist emos is not a problem just in Mexico. In Poland too. My schoolmates doesn't know anything about real emo (yeah I'm one of them, I guess), they've only read some stupid things in newspapers like "Bravo",have seen some posers and now they think that I only think about suicide etc. They discriminate me or can't belive that I'm emo ('cause I haven't got piercing and I'm not wearing black clothes and typical make up all the time). They forgot that the 'emo' style created by media are not (mostly) real emo punk . Freaky. And sad.

Here where I live it's mostly punks against skinheads or football hooligans against metalheads and punks.

It's just wrong.
And the worst part is,there's always like 20 football hooligans/skinheads against 6 or 10 punks/metalheads.

No one should be judged by the music he/she likes or by the clothes he/she wears.

There's not much that can be done about it. People will always have prejudice against people that are alternative.

And doing things like liking some cradle of filth tracks some Husker du tracks some dance and even things like steps and not giving a crap what people think...
Oh and ive been often beaten up for having blonde hair, and, from some comments by people after wards (Why do you dye your hair blonde- shouted from afar mind pathetic idiots Hand) i can safely assume that was the primary reason for me being attacked, even though I DONT dye my hair blonde people make assumptions and unfortunatly act on them. I mean I cannot count the amount of times ive been beaten up for liking green day by pretty much every subculture it is, to chavs, im a "goff innit" and to punks/metalheads im a chav... or emo...

Its riducluous. Hand

You can't be different and expect to be accepted.
You've got take a few beatings and realize that you know, you have to have a heart of stone to push through in this world.

You can't sit in a bubble and expect everyone to love you, you can't like everyone whether it's because of their music interest,t heir hasir, their skin etc.

It does not matter if everyone loves you. The opposite of love is not even hate, it is indifference. Respect is the issue here, that people are not being respected for their differences. If every single different person were to get a beating, the world would be beating itself up.
