OK, so this Monday, I think, will mark the tenth anniversary since the Columbine school shootings, and I cant find the old topic on this that I sure was made, so I decided to start a new one, with a different direction.

The question of motive and intent and legality of the shootings has been debated to death in this forum, as I remember. But reading an article today, I realised that there is an interesting correlation between all school shootings in recent history.

I'm sure everyone has also heard of the Virginia Tech shootings as well as other shootings occuring in Germany and Finland. And it has been brought to my attention that out of all these extreme acts of violence upon innocent civilians, all have been carried out mostly by teenage, or adolescent boys apart from the shooting in Germany, I think the gunman was 60, and one incident where the gunman was a gunboy of 11 years.

No girls, that I have heard of have ever been involved in a school shooting, which I think is really interesting from a socialogical aspect. So are grils better than boys at supressing violent urges? Or do girls maybe have less of a reason to act out than boys do? What do you think are the reasons behind this?

Btw, as soon as the old thread is found, I'll repost this there.

Personally, I believe girls are (sadly) more subjected to rejection and being put down. It's every where you go and it's in everything you read.
However boys aren't usually put down, and when they are it's usually in a joking manner.

Most school shootings occur from those who had been bullied.

Here, in Québec (Montréal, I should say), we have had a surprisingly high number of school shootings in past decades. There was Polytechnique in 1989 (20th anniversary this year), Concordia University in 1992 and Dawson College in 2006.

This year, it's the 20th anniversary of the Polytechnique massacre. There was a movie released just recently about it. It still sparks controversy. Some people thought it was innapropriate, amongst those were some family members of the women killed. But then again, most people thought it was well done (I know my cousin saw it, and she thought it was very appropriate, but yer...it's not exactly the same.) I haven't seen it, but apparently it covers a less common aspect of these kinds of shootings: what about the people that survived? What about the PTSD? Many of the survivors (mostly the men) were judged by the public, and people around them asking, ''why didn't you help them? Why did you run away?'' Some commited suicide.

The Polytechnique massacre was one that was only aimed at women, which is one thing that might have made it worse in the media eye.

As for the age of the shooters, I would say you're right, but I would say 'young adults', not necessarily teenagers. Marc Lépine, the Poly shooter was 25 and so was the Dawson shooter.
However the Concordia shooter was 52 at the time.
I don't know why it seems to be mostly younger people that perpetrate these kinds of massacres, to be honest.

The question about women not doing these kinds of things usually is very interesting. I don't know anything about psychology or sociology (or whatever kind of ology, tbh :p) so I don't really know. But I *would* be interested to see what others have to say about that.

I go to a school where there has been a shooting, and even if it's been years you still feel ackward talking about it and it's still a delicate subject. Though it also drives a curiosity as to why, it happened and how. There are still people around here that went through that experince and I can actually talk to them.

And idk about girls and shooting people.

guys just have more testosterone etc.
That may contribute. I'm not sure. Males are obviously more agressive, and territorial. But usually, if you want to kill someone or yourself, you have a mental problem, or you've been dragged down that path, that may severely alter your mental being.
