American High Schools(most not all)--

1. Dress to express yourself or to just fit in

2. Different groups--Popular,Preppy,Loners,Geeks,Skaters,Weirdos,Mean People,Religious,Potheads, & many more I JUST CANT THINK OF THEM.

3. Cool teachers that are funn, evil old teachers that seem to hate only you

4. bad lunches

5. American Football games--those Friday nights--Smile

6. Cheerleaders--Popular but entertaining, sometimes mean

Feel free to add comments on mine if they were different in you high school.
& what are other countries school like?

I go an American High School.
It's not like that at all.
What you described seem's like the high schools you see in the movies.

At my secondary school, there was a vague social hierarchy, but the boundaries became less defined in the sixth form.

Me either. I feel like it should be located somewhere else.
But I still find it interesting to see how other schools work.

That's weird.
lol.

So like, from Primary to high school, how does that work?

I know that I have heard in History something about how once you get out of like high school, you go straight to a college, but it's based on your grades or something what you are aloud to be. And they wont let you just pick anything.

But I may have that wrong...or am confusing it with communism.
lol.

At my high school in California, everyone got along and were friends, so there were no cliques at all. I mostly hung out with a group of people who liked the same music as me, but we weren't emo or anything.

In Germany, you visit elementary school first. When you've finished, there are three possibilities to go on, which one you choose depends on your grades. So not everyone visits the same school.
In the schools for the "worse" ones you finish after 9th grade and in the other one usually after 10th grade. There's a school for "good" students, too, and you used to finish after 13th grade but they changed it to the new system called "G8" where you only go to school until 12th grade. Then you do your school leaving examinations and either start working or go to a university.

But actually it's too different to explain it.

I went on a tour with my school in 2009 and got to experience going to an American school. It was this super rich public school that had two campus', 4000 students on the campus we were on and, well, it was just a whole different world to what I'm used to. Amazing, though.

Wow, that's wicked.
I can't imagen it.

I just go to a public school.
Average.
There's just everyone,
You pick who your friends based on them, not on "groups"
And you of course get to pick all your classes you want to take.

In Quebec (I'm not generalizing all of Canada here because each province tends to be slightly different) High school runs from grades 7-11. I went to a pretty average public school, but the culture is really different from the high schools on american TV shows. The whole football thing just doesn't exist. At least for the high schools in my area, not many of them have the money to invest in the field, uniforms, and there's just not that much interest. Rugby was the main attraction when I was in high school. The clique situation wasn't that bad either, there were groups, but not much in the way of conflict. Pretty average.

When you graduate in grade 11, you go to CEGEP (Collège d'enseignement général et professionnel). 3 years for a career diploma (like something you would get at a community college) or 2 years for a pre-university program. If you're doing a pre-university program, you study a domain (i.e, Social Sciences or Sciences, etc.) Then when you go to university, you usually go directly into your major, something more specific (i.e, History or Biology). Most bachelor degrees take 3 years of uni.

lol long, sorry Laughing
