Stigmata are bodily marks, sores, or sensations of pain in locations corresponding to the crucifixion wounds of Jesus Christ. An individual bearing stigmata is referred to as a stigmatic.

The causes of stigmata are the subject of considerable debate. Some contend that they are miraculous, while others argue they are hoaxes or can be explained medically.

Stigmata are primarily associated with the Roman Catholic faith. Many reported stigmatics are members of Catholic religious orders. The majority of reported stigmatics are female.

Reported cases of stigmata take various forms. Many show some or all of the five Holy Wounds that were, according to the Bible, inflicted on Jesus during his crucifixion: wounds in the hands and feet, from nails, and in the side, from a lance. Some stigmatics display wounds to the forehead similar to those caused by the crown of thorns. Other reported forms include tears of blood or sweating blood, wounds to the back as from scourging, or wounds to the shoulder as from bearing the cross.

Some stigmatics claim to feel the pain of wounds with no external marks; these are referred to as invisible stigmata. In other cases, stigmata are accompanied by extreme pain. Some stigmatics' wounds do not appear to clot and stay fresh and uninfected. The blood from the wounds is said, in some cases, to have a pleasant, perfumed odor.

Cases of stigmata have been reported at different ages for different stigmatics. Some have manifested stigmata continually after the first appearance; others have shown periodic stigmata that re-occur at certain times of the day or on certain, sometimes holy, days through out the year.

I Think that Stigmata is real. Not all of the cases can be explained away via science or discredited as Hoaxes

I'm not sure whether I believe stigmata has to actually do with Jesus or whatever, but didn't you say once that my friend had stigmata?

This site is an interesting read.. at the moment I'm not finished reading it, but its really interesting.

I've never really thought about it.. I mean, I suppose it could be faked, or be part of some psychological thing. And tears of blood, well, that could just be some disorder that the person has.

But its kind of creepy..

I think some people are of course faking it, but maybe a lot of the people who aren't faking it as such, may have multiple personality disorder, or something?

that site is very interesting.
i have never personally encountered a stigmatic, but i would believe them to be true. some of those cases can't exactly be explained away.

of course, it wouldn't be that hard to fake the marks. Rolling Eyes

i could even pretend to be one, as i have two scars on the tops of my feet.
(from doing rockstar slides down a hallway in flipflops...)

but it suprised my cousin when she saw them and she asked me if i was a stigmatic. i had no idea what they were though.
so i am not one.

but i would believe it could have something to do with God/Jesus

I have always been fascinated by Stigmata.

Ever seen the movie, with Patricia Arquette? It's the best.

I study it a lot...I'm really interested in it.

You Know I was also thinking about the people who fake something like this, what are they trying to accomplish? I mean some probably just want the attention, but others I wonder if they think they were meant to or something. To Bring their religion attention or someting. I mean, if you're truely faking it, and putting Holes through yourself and willing to go through all that pain for some other cause aside from Fame, I always questioned what it was that made you do it. Maybe its to give other people more faith and thats why they do it.

I've seen a couple shows about it on TV and it was creepy, but I'm not sure whether I believe it or not.

i did some research about this and there are more than the normal signs of Stigmata, we know there are the hand wounds, and feet wounds, and we also know about the cuts on the head from the crown of thorns but there are also wounds in the sides from where christ was stabbed by a man who felt sorry for him and wanted his death to come quickly, also many people who put holes in they're hands are doing it in the wrong places it is actually through the wrist, because if he was put on the cross by the hands they would be ripped of and also they put nails through his feet.

This brings up another, less talked about stigmata wound: scourging or whipping of Jesus's back.
scourging was done with a whip call the flagellum, it was made out of leather thongs with heavy bar-bell shaped pices of lead tied to the ends and it would basicly tear your skin off. This was done a about 40 times and could vary easly kill the one being punnished.
and another thing
The crown of thorns, although most commonly displayed in art as a wreath, was acually more like bushell. thorn bushells are quite common in Dead sea area and wreath around someones head was not really in the culture of Jesus as a full on crown. and plus a big bush on someone head would be more imbarassing anyways.

I saw that movie called Stigmata...so freaky...
I haven't yet decided I believe it...
I mean, why would Jesus WANT you to feel the pain he did?? That's kind of evil in a way.
I don't know.
It's so confusing.

Maiku's Requiem:

that's something I don't like about the phenomenon. All the approved cases of Stigmata have been in people of great faith, poople like saintly nuns and Priest and so on.
I think that God should give the "blessing" to some people of little or no faith becuse it would have a stronger effect on skeptics and would be harder to explain.

Also, although it's belived that the frist Stigmatic was Saint Francis of Assisi, Their is evidence that points to that possibly The Apostle Paul may have had Stigmata.
He speaks of "Bearing the Branded Marks of Jesus on his Body." "brand" being stigma is Greek which is were the word Stigmata comes from.

jesus died so that we wouldnt feel the pain he felt, but however people who are of great faith and some who are not want to get close has possible to jesus and they (some of them) mark themselfs, however many of them are just holes in hands and feet but what about the dagger wound that jesus actually died from because a gaurd felt sorry for him, what about the fact that the nails were actually put through his wrists and not hands and also what about the whipping marks he suffered?

there have been some who have gotten the wounds though the wrists, though they seem to be the less well known Stigmataics.

I think it exists, but i think it's just something in peoples brain.
i'll give an example: Someone got to a hypnotist and he told to the man: i'm gonna put a hot coin on your hand. the man screamed it out when the coin hit the skin and when the hypnotist removed it, the skin was burnt. and the coin was never been hot.
this really happened and i think stigmata is exactly the same.
