Personally, I think the song "Letterbomb" is the best song on the album "American Idiot" as well as Green Day's best song ever.

I've read that the song describes a letter that Whatsername wrote to Jesus/St. Jimmy to break up with him because of his dual lifestyle. She tells him that he has been lying to himself and that he isn't a real rebel like she is. She also mentions that he is neither the Jesus of Suburbia nor St. Jimmy, and that she was a complete idiot to ever fall for him ("You're not the Jesus of Suburbia. The St. Jimmy is a figment of your father's rage and your mother's love. Made me the idiot America." ).

This is a really clever song that takes a while to catch onto. Well, it took me a while to catch onto it, at least. Razz Green Day did an excellent job with this song.

I think the meaning of this song is all in the chorus: "It's not over 'til you're underground." I think that basically, she realized what was happening in Extraordinary Girl(the two were growing apart, he couldn't provide for her, etc.) so she took the iniative to break up with him. If you look carefully in the booklet, the letter ends at "The St. Jimmy is a figment of your father's rage and your mother's love." Jesus adds "made me the idiot america." and the rest of the song himself (I don't really know why just that he does). Overall the song is a breakup letter, but it also is Whatsername's way of telling Jesus what is wrong with him and that he needs to move on.

Tell me bout it, tell me how you feel. And if the feel is real, tell me whatz the deal.

I concur. This song is not only the best song on the album, but it's the best Green Day song period.

I think this is Green Day's smartest song, not my favourite but one of my favourites.
It's all to do with Jimmy's girlfriend leaving and how she has wasted her time a with poser.
your not the Jesus of subrubia, St Jimmy is figment of your fathers rage and your mothers love says it all.
