Fuck Off And Die!:
My dad hit me when I was little.
I know that he has beaten up my mom many times.

I was always hit when I was little. I mentioned once that two days ago my mother was beating the shit out of my 12 y.o sister. And she kicked me on the same day. And you know what? I have a really short temper now; I end up hitting people myself and getting really shocked at how I could do that and how I've turned out like my mother. My dad used to hit me, but doesn't anymore. My mum on the other hand..

my mum was abusive and when i reache the age of 16 i left and never spoke to her again.

I wasn't hit a lot, only when my dad got really pissed with me or he was really drunk and came home from a bad day of work.

I'd have to say I had a pretty good life living with just my mom, and it's even better because my dads laying off the drinks and he remarried my mom. So yea. Very Happy

Abusing the child may cause the child to abuse his children.

Hmmm... I never really thought of it that way... I guess you're right though.

I thought people who had an abusive childhood would treat their kids nicely.. considering they know what it feels like..

You have to remember thats how they grew up, its what they know. Parents pass on alot of traits to their kids, this being one of the nasty ones.

That is child abuse, I'm sorry to hear about your friend...
I doubt there are many people on here that would say child abuse isn't sick or wrong. It's something I feel quite strongly about actually.
Physical child abuse, i.e. when a child is beaten up on a regular basis, not only physically damages a child but it also gets to their head. Sometimes, the child starts to believe that they deserve it, and that what is happening to them is normal, or that they are being punished with reason.
Sexual abuse....I'm not saying it's worse, but I think when a child is sexually abused by a parent or carer, it really hits people, so to speak. To think that the person/people who are supposed to be protecting you from it are causing it is unbelievable. It's sickening.
There's mental abuse too. This is less known about, I think, really. Controlling a child's mind, controlling their actions, basically telling them what to think and how to act. This can also be linked to sexual abuse. If a child is told from being a baby that being sexually abused is normal, they probably won't question it.
I've never been abused. My friend's mother has been domestically abused by her husband, and my friend has been hit a few times, but apart from that it's very rare where I live.
I think if a man, or woman, abuses their children, they should go to prison. For a long, long time, if not forever.
How can someone corrupt someone's life like that?

I agree with you, 100%. All forms of abuse, not just physical are harmful. Child abuse in particular has always bothered me more so than any other kind. Its a child, so young and impressionable, andthat is what they have to go through. What could a 5 year old do to possibly deserve that? Absolutely nothing. I remember a couple years ago there was this lady from Texas who abused her children and pretty much everyone in her town knew, and no one did anything. Then she ended up drowning all 5 of them in the bathtub. I actually cried watching that on the news. It was horrible, and no one did anything about it. People who sit by and watch are just as guilty as those doing the abusing.

i would never say run away, you never know what you will run to. I had to reach 16 before i could leave and thankfully i have never spoken to her again. To make sure that i never see her again i have even stayed away from family things like funerals, and weddings and christenings, its just not worth the shit it would cause.

that's such a shame for you and your friend but at least, if she's living with her real dad she is away from her step dad

On the topic of child abuse, in general, I think it's sick , but then I think any type of physical/sexual etc abuse is sick, like I was reading a magazine today and there was a reference to Gary Glitter*looks up magazine*.....I can't find it but it was a normal refernce to one of Gary Glitter's albums without mentioning any of the child abuse stories, I don't believe this is wrong because the artist was talking about the album's sound and influences but when someone famous is exploited in a child abuse story like this people tend to avoid talking about the artist because it makes them feel uneasy or uncomfortable ignoring their actual music, like how a lot of Michael Jackson's album sales have slowed during his trial maybe because people may not have wanted to buy his music, not becasue of quality, but because a verdict for the trial had not been reached and people may not have wanted to buy his albums because if a guilty verdict was reached some may feel uncomfortable listening to his music.

The paragraph above is mainly about sexual abuse on children ,I didn't start a new topic about this because it would be locked and categorised under general child abuse

Bumping threads with nothing useful to say is bad, but this thread has a point so we need to keep it. It happens here. If we locked every thread that was bumped, there'd be nothing being discussed at all.

ON TOPIC from now on, please.

So, I was watching the news last night and something came up about new definitions of child abuse. Missouri ( I don't know about other states on this subject, sorry) is considering laws making smoking around children an offense justified on wreckless child endangerment. They were talking about doing the same for people who speed with children in the car.

I already know the smoking one will never pass here, we haven't even banned smoking in public places, theres no way a law would get passed saying parents can't smoke around children.

The speeding one I totally and completely agree with. You shouldn't ever speed, but if you have children in the car, you're responsible for them and driving at dangerous speeds is not being responsible. It's the opposite.

It doesnt always happen. My great-grandfather was an abusive alcoholic, a rapist, and he embezzed loads of money and ended up in prison. Thank God, none of that ever ended up in my family ever again.

Maybe the worse it is, the less the child will take the same approach. Because all my great-aunts and great-uncles and granddad never like him. Infact, after he died, they burned every possission of his that they could find. I think it's because that there is a point where the child completely detaches himself or herself from the abuser in everyway. I mean, my mother hits me, the other side of the family, still, even at my age, but now it's in a 'you idiot' kinda joking way. But before, it was quite serious, but I just sucked it up and learned from it, I really did, I didn't care how many bruises or whatever, I could never ignore that she was my mother, in that way I've been called crazy, but I'm sure that if it had been half as bad as my great-grandfather supposedly was, I would have seperated myself from her.

Not to say that I intend to hit my children, or I don't intend. Sometimes, I do think it is necessary, but whether it's abuse is a different subject.
