It's Cheech, Baby!
Cheech, the amazing alcoholic beverage named and loved by Tre Cool, is enjoyed by drinkers worldwide. Consisting of silver tequila, tonic and a little wedge of lemon to top it off, was named by Tre Cool himself but was not created by him. It’s been handed down from Timothy Leary to Cheech Marin and remained unnamed for sometime until Tre was introduced to it. Now the question forms: just how much of the stuff does Mr. Cool drink?
Reprise Records
Reprise Records…You're probably aware that Green Day are currently signed to that label and if you didn’t know that - you should have. Reprise is a division of the highly successful Warner Bros Studios and is the home to many bands and artists. But how much do you know about the label itself, and the connection it has with Green Day?
The European Music Awards 2005
That year the European Music Awards were held in Lisbon, Portugal. Along with other stars, Green Day were there and nominated for many awards along with performing Holiday live. Billie Joe was wearing an all-black suit, as was Tré. Mike had a stripy black suit and a red tie.
They Truly Are the Champions
If you look Grammy up in the dictionary it says: "A service mark used for any of the statuettes awarded by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for excellence in the recording industry." If that isn’t the understatement of the year I’m not sure what is. The Grammys in the music industry are like carb-filled, chocolate icing covered doughnuts to the obese kid in the bakery, which means they are pretty damn awesome. Sure, there are lots of other award shows, like the VMA’s, AMA’s, EMA’s, but the Grammys are in a league of their own. (Plus it gets old saying all those abbreviations.) Being nominated for a Grammy is worth something, but winning is priceless.
The 924 Gilman Street Project
The 924 Gilman Street Project, also known as the 'Alternative Music Foundation' is a famed Berkeley all-ages club. Since its establishment in 1986, the Gilman Street Project has been a haven for aspiring punk rockers, maligned youth and East Bay citizens. The venue is regarded as the west coast version of New York's CBGB's, and is famed for bringing a positive place for youth and music to Berkeley. One of the country's oldest DIY punk clubs, what sets it apart from most other Punk venues is its endeavour to provide a safe environment, free from drugs, alcohol and violence.
Lights, Camera, Action!
Aside from Sam Bayer, Green Day has had other astounding music video directors. Some may have created only one video, others can be credited for over half. Regardless of the quantity, they are all of excellent quality. Green Day has continued to experiment with directors from album to album, and the very first, and extremely successful one was Mark Kohr.
Behind Green Day
Green Day has one of the most visual shows on the planet. Billie Joe is never standing in the same place for more than three seconds. When you're racing across the stage, double picking to St. Jimmy isn’t always practical. Luckily, Green Day has an astounding crew in the background to let the wild and crazy stage antics continue.
Green Day's Beginning: Lookout! Records
Before Green Day’s mainstream success was even thought of, there was a band called Sweet Children who desperately needed a label. Coincidently, there was a man named Larry Livermore with a label who needed new, aspiring artists, and as a result Green Day was born.
Tré's Support System
Lovable drummer Frank Edwin Wright III (Also known as Tré Cool) was born in Frankfurt on December 9th, 1972, and is the youngest member of Green Day. He later grew up in a remote rural area known as Iron Peak, 18 miles outside of Laytonville, California.
The Age of Insomniac
The age of Insomniac dawned on October 10th, 1995. Just one year after Green Day's first foray into the mainstream (with Dookie), the young band came out with another record. Insomniac was a darker, more record type sound and Green Day's second album under major label Reprise Records. Essentially, it was the band's in Utero. Even the artwork for Insomniac (entitled God told me to skin you alive), was a sign of the band's new direction and it was a dangerous one. Green Day's new legion of MTV fans wanted another Dookie, and instead they got something new, something untested. Unsurprisingly, they began to move onto newer things. Dookie had helped to fill a post-Nirvana vacuum, but could Insomniac match up to its bigger, more successful brother?
