Dear Mr. President.
Dear Mr. President is the latest song by Pink!. In this song, she directly adresses to the President of the United States, George W. Bush. I personally like the song, the melody and the atmosphere. But I can't really agree to the some parts of the content of the song, the lyrics.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a supporter of George W. Bush at all, but I also think that the song goes to far.
I'll explain to you why.
First I'd like to point out some positive things though. I think Pink! brings up some good arguments in the song. The strongest one to me are these:
What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away?
And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay?
and also:
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Minimum wage with a baby on the way
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Building a bed out of a cardboard box
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Hard work
Nevertheless, the song, unfortunately, also has some very stupid remarks.
Dear Mr. President,
Were you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
I personally think that this goes to far. Don't get me wrong, I know not much about his personal life, nor am I interested in it but I think this part is pretty mean and unnecessary. They could have come up with better arguments.
Another part that also goes to far is this one:
You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine.
You might argue that he hurts other people too. But do they have to go down to his level then? It would only prove that they're nothing better than him.
I think they should be able to come up with better arguments than that. And with those the song could have been so much greater.
Now you might also argue that it's stupid to "interpret" a song like that. Well, the song surely has the intention to tell us something, to make us aware, so I think we should have a closer look at it.
I think people too often just get caught in the flow, everyone says it's great and the new "wow" and they take things without even having a closer look at them.
Don't be scared to disagree with the majority.

Personally, I don't really find anything wrong with the bit about the cocaine.
He did cocaine. Big deal. Everyone knows, it's not like she dug up some big secret and released it through song. Yeah, a lot of people do drugs. Or have done drugs in the past. I'd guess if they didn't want to get hassled about it later on down the road, they probably wouldn't have done it. Not saying they want to be hassled, but you should think about the consequences of stuff like that. And even if at the time he thought it wouldn't amount to anything-of course it would. Even if he hadn't become president, his father was, so obviously it's not gonna stay a secret for long.

I personally believe it is unfair to attack him like this.
This silly pop song will not change anything. If she really cared she'd be doing something a bit more drastic.
Musicians should keep their political views to themselves.

Considering the fact that he is a murderer, no I dont think that she is being harsh at all.
And by the lonely boy thing she is asking him what it is that makes him so cold blooded.
And plus he was a drunk and did cocaine, only losers are drunks and do cocaine. And murder people.

The song's alright, and the point she puts across is true, but you are right. Great blog :]

It's a good song, and she does some have great points in there.
but like you said, some of it wasn't needed, and it's just sad really.

i love that song, and i hope Bush knows about it. P!nk is awesome, and its good to know that she is not afraid to let her voice be heard.

Thats why musicians shouldn't try and be politicians; they have to add in all the drama and insults to make their stuff sell. Personally, I can't take anything political she says seriously because she feels it needed to degrade those she disagrees with so that others support her opinions and thats wrong.

I'm not crazy about Pink, but she makes good points in the song. I don't think insults [are you a lonely boy?] should be brought into the subject though. That just brings her down to a lower level.
Great blog.

I really agree with you too.
