An observation on patriotism.
I think it really sucks, how a lot of people seem to think that people who don't support the war are unpatriotic.
Being patriotic doesn't mean you blindly follow your government, at least not in my eyes. It means you hold your officials to a higher standard, and question the things they do that you don't agree with. Keep them on their toes kind of thing.
And this is a tad random, but according to my definition of patriotism, GWB has no business running the US. He drank like a sailor in college, apparently used cocaine, etc...True, no one should have to live with stuff they did in the past for the rest of their lives [unless they like killed someone, etc.] But is he really the kind of person who should be representing the US?
Another thing-a lot of people, at least where I'm from, don't seem to understand that you can support the armed forces without supporting the war. For example, I am strongly anti-war, at least in this case, but one of my closest friends is in the army-he's at basic right now, he can't do combat coz he has a bad knee, so he's doing computer programming in Germany after basic-and I just want to cheer him on and let him know how much I can't wait to see him again, that kind of thing. I am eternally grateful to God that he won't be doing any fighting...

You're totally right. Patriotism is about loving your country and loving your freedom. If you don't support war, it's totally acceptable, because we're only human. And humans fight, and disagree on everything. I personally am totally against the war in Iraq and would want the troops to be sent home ASAP.
But this blog was excellent and I like it.

you're right, just because you don't support the war doesn't mean you're unpatriotic. however, this pointless and endless war, along with George Bush, doesn't give Americans too many reasons to be patriotic. i used to consider myself patriotic but because of George Bush I'm ashamed of being an American.
