Christmas - a commercial tradition?

[this is just a rant]

Many kids are already counting down the days: less than five weeks till Christmas. They are excited for the Christmas cookies, the snow, the holiday, and, of course, the presents.

But year after year I hear the same complaints about Christmas. It's boring and annoying, redundant and pure commercial. Of course, there are a lot of people who make a big bunch of money out of the yearly Christmas business. Many people feel bombarded by the whole Christmas idea. You can already see Christmas light in November, the Christmas market is about to start too. And why should we buy something for people anyways, some ask. Christmas presents become more and more expensive. Christmas decoration more and more extravagant. Christmas sucks, we don't want it, we don't need it.

Hearing people talk like that actually makes me sad.

Why do so many people always have to look at the bad side of things?
First of all, Christmas is a traditional holiday. It actually means something for a lot of people. If we get rid of more and more old tradition then how should our culture survive? Christmas brings people together. The whole family maybe meets once a year to celebrate that special holiday together. You light up candles, you dim the light, and you listen to Christmas music. I know it's not like that in all families, but many families still celebrate it like that.

Christmas bears a lot of positive values that we should keep. Charity, altruism, and family and friendship values are just some of them.

Thanks to Christmas a lot of people actually have a job. And the economy that deals with Christmas stuff does not only work around Christmas. It's a business that is going on all year. Imagine canceling the whole Christmas business, do you dare to imagine how many jobs we would loose, how much it would hurt your countries' economy?

And don't you love the smile you bring onto people's face when you give them a small present? I love it. I love Christmas for so many reasons. It doesn't matter if you have a big or a small present for someone, it doesn't matter if you have a present at all. What matters is that you think of someone, that you share some special time with them.

I love the smell on Christmas, I love the candles and the romantic atmosphere. I love going on the Christmas market and drink mulled wine, meet up with friends and have a good time. Look at all the happy smiles in the kid's faces.

And you know, everything is commercial nowadays, Christmas is just as commercial as love or friendship. You don't have to join that commercial trip. Be individual, celebrate it your own way.

People have to learn to not be too bitter about everything. Life is full of so many bad things. We should keep and save the peaceful things we have in life.
