Swedish For Dummies

Ah, Sweden. The long country in the far north. Polar bears on the streets? Minus 300 degrees in the winter?
You have heard the amazing stories of Sweden, and like many others, you are determined to go there and see it with your own eyes! Are these fascinating stories true? Is the truth that wherever in Sweden you are, you're always in the prosperous environment?
Obviously not!
But, I won't advise anyone against going to Sweden! It might not be the land of exotic palms or permafrost, but there are lots and lots of reasons to go here. In fact, Sweden is just as mordenized as your oh so hardcore towns! (if not more ;D)
So if you ever go to Sweden, you might walk into a few swedes. Would you feel like communicating with them? Without strange gesticulations and horrifying gargling? Then, I give you the offer to walk into the jungle of the Swedish language!
Let's start with pronouns!
I - jag
You - du
He, she, it - han, hon, det
We - vi
You - ni
They - de (pronounced dom)
The Swedish word for is/are is är. It never changes, even if he, they or you are something. Every pronoun är.
Soon, you can start composing your own Swedish sentences!
Some Swedish substantives are;
car - bil
band - band
computer - dator
girl - tjej
boy - kille
book - bok
house - hus
Let me mention some adjectives, and your sentence shall be complete!
If you ever go to Sweden, and you think 'oh, he is so hot' or 'that man should shut up!', then tell them!
Good-looking, handsome - snygg
Stupid - dum
Tall - lång
Short - kort
Pathetic - patetisk
Yellow - gul
Pink - rosa
Pale - blek
Cool - cool
To put more affection into your sentences, use väldigt, which means very.
The most common words used in questions are;
vem - who
var - where
varför - why
när - when
vad - what
In most cases, you put the words in the same order. Example:
Vem är det?
eng. Who is that?
Also, let's take a look at common Swedish verbs!
Think - tänka
Do - göra
Talk - prata
Smile - le
Write - skriva
These verbs in imperfect form are tänkte, gjorde, pratade, log and skrev.
Unfortunately, the imperfect forms of Swedish verbs are a bit... well, weird, and there are no particular grammar rules for them that I could mention. Only the talented speak Swedish

In present form, they are; tänker, gör, pratar, ler and skriver.
So, still understand how to put the pieces into a sentence?
Pick something from the first list, pronouns. Pick something from the questions word list. Then pick something from the verb list. Put them together! (remember to use är if needed)
Example; Vad tänker han?
eng. What is he thinking?
I will end this short lesson with some nice well-needed phrases! Enjoy.
The last person who said that to me got his tentacles shoved down his throat - Den senaste personen som sa så till mig fick sina tentakler nerkörda i halsen
Shut up - håll käften
Who the hell do you think you are? - vem fan tror du att du är?
You make me sick - du äcklar mig
What the fuck? - vad fan?
You're a dork - du är en tönt
How are you? - hur mår du?
I'm fine - Jag mår bra
Nice to meet you - Trevligt att träffas
I hope to never meet you again - Jag hoppas vi aldrig ses igen
Please, feel free to ask me questions. x]
Now, let me see what you learned! Give me some of that Swedish blah!
and good luck visiting us ;]

Ah, I quite appreciate this blog. I've been peculiarly fascinated with Sweden and Swedish things for a few years now. I want to learn Swedish but I doubt I'd be any good at it because I'd have nobody to practice it with.
Allemänsratten is my favourite word. :D
That's a word, right?

yeah :]
Languages like Spanish are based on latin, while Swedish is one of the 'german' languages. So yep, it's kinda close :] I understand most german texts and stuff.
Lissie!, February 11th, 2008 at 08:40:48am
I noticed some Swedish words are very much like German words. :]
Like dum = dumm, lång = lang, kort = kurz.
And the word for you is exactly the same. I like this. :D
