Warning: RANT!
This is something I observe quite often. I don't want to offend anyone, it's not what criticism is all about. And that's also what this should be: a criticism.
I think it's quite sad that it seems like people don't dare to actually criticize people because people tend to take it personal. I'm not saying that I'm better, because I have to learn to take criticism better, too. But this should be about something else, it's about people who simply don't look behind the words; because not everything that sounds good is actually good.
I don't like it when people always agree on everything. It's like OH YA YOU'RE SO RIGHT OMG *hails*. I see it on GSB, but I also see it outside. Someone writes or says something that comes out as half smart, and everyone is like OMG THATS SO GOOD, WELL WRITTEN/SAID.
I wished people would read more between the lines, I wished they wouldn't just agree to everything that seems right at first glance. And you know what, even if you might not always be right, you should not always agree to everything, you should challenge people, you should be critical and test if they truly stand behind what they write.
It's so boring if everyone's just like OH YA THATS SOOOO GOOD. Give them advice of what to do better, challenge them in their beliefs. That also leads to a stronger forming of beliefs and helps the people actually.
But then again I think some people aren't even interested in that or take any kind of criticism serious. Also there are a lot of people who don't dare to criticize someone because they don't want to offend. If you stick with the popular people and agree to what they say that doesn't help anything.
This blog might come out a little harsh and many people might not agree to what I say but that's what's positive. It's not about people agreeing, it's about starting an argumentation, it's about debating over things, and not just saying what's obvious, or agreeing easily on things that seem oh so great.
constructive critisism huh? i like that stuff.

Ha, well, I still agree with this.
Sometimes I'm like "I'd like some constructive criticism" or whatnot, and I never seem to get any.
Pluswise, people get offended if you disagree. You're putting your work out there- recieving some negative feedback is the risk you take.
In addition, I often see pieces of writing that are, for lack of a better word, pretty bad but people still put "AMAZING!" comments; it won't really help the writer in the long run to give false compliments.
Good blog.... and I mean it :]

Ironically enough, I agree.
Criticism is needed. I don't like it when people are all 'omg I agree 100%' when they don't, but at the same time, I don't like it when people use criticism to make fun of someone, if you know what I mean.

I understand what you are saying completely. I see it often as well, and to be honest I often wonder how closely people are reading. Especially when the blog contradicts itself, or when it contradicts an earlier one. But you do have to remember Susi, you and I (well I am at least) are a lot older and we are well rehearsed in the art of critical reading.

Well, maybe someone gets a lot of "oooo's" and "ahhh's" because it relaly acutally is well written/said.
But I know what you're getting at .
I think the thing with GSB is a lot of people find it as a an escape from the real world and tried to avoid conflict because thats all they get in their real life. So, starting a argument is not something that they really want to do, because GSB is that "laid back hangout" place for them.
Yet their are some GSBians, such as yourself, that do in fact challenge people...I think either way is okay. It just depends what kind of person you are, i suppose.
