Nine in the Afternoon

So, there's this song by Panic! at the Disco. I'm sure you've all heard it. It's called Nine in the Afternoon.

Now, what does this song mean? Let's listen, watch, and have a close look at the lyrics:

Back to the street where we began
Feeling as good as lovers can, you know
Now we're feeling so good

Thinking of things we shouldn't read
It looks like the end of history as we know
Its just the end of the world
Back to the street where we began
Feeling as good as love, you could you can

Into a place, where thoughts can bloom
Into a room where it's nine in the afternoon
And we know that it could be
And we know that it should
And you know that you feel it too

'Cause it's nine in the afternoon and
Your eyes are the size of the moon
You could 'cause you can so you do
We're feeling so good
Just the way that we do

When it's nine in the afternoon
Your eyes are the size of the moon
You could 'cause you can so you do
We're feeling so good

Back to the street
Down to our feet
Losing the feeling of feeling unique
Do ya know what I mean?

Back to the place
Where we used to say
Man it feels good to feel this way
Now I know what I mean

Back to the street, back to the place
Back to the room where it all began
Back to the room where it all began

Cause it's nine in the afternoon
Your eyes are the size of the moon
You could 'cause you can so you do
We're feeling so good
Just the way that we do

When it's nine in the afternoon
Your eyes are the size of the moon
You could 'cause you can so you do
We're feeling so good
Just the way that we do
When it's nine in the afternoon

Your eyes are the size of the moon
You could 'cause you can so you do
We're feeling so good
Just the way that we do
When it's nine in the afternoon

At first glance, this looks like a nonsense song written by a horny guy who really needs to lay off the drugs. The entire video looks kind of like one big acid trip.

But if you take a closer look, the song has a much deeper meaning. It seems like it's about love, and how if you don't care for it and tend to it, love will lose its luster and there will be nothing left. The narrator states that he wishes he could go back to the way things used to be, when everything was nice and so pleasant that he must be dreaming, or in a place and time that is completely non existent, hence the name "Nine in the Afternoon". (this is my interpretation)

The song is also about how happy the band is to be back recording, and how they have really changed as a band. Their music is totally different now from A Fever You Can't Sweat Out.

Also, their practice room was so dark and windowless that when someone asked what time it was, one of them responded, "Seven in the afternoon" which Ryan changed to "Nine in the afternoon" to fit the rhythm of the song better.

So, thanks for enduring my little review. I feel very special now.
