Christianity
I know religion and Christianity in particular is a highly unpopular subject on this site, but I feel compelled to dispel some of the stereotypes that surround the subject and also the ignorance that is embedded in it.
Let me start off with this- I am an evangelical* Christian, and I am also a democrat. Yesterday I crossed my fingers for change and I cried when we got it. I believe in love, faith, and acceptance even without understanding.
My views:
I am pro-choice. I do not wish to argue this point, but it is merely because while I would not have an abortion partly because of my religion and partly because I don’t think I would be able to anyway, not everyone shares my views and a section of peoples’ morals should not be made into a law. There is a clear separation of church and state that should always exist. The same goes for prayer in public schools and so forth- it is not our place to inflict our beliefs on others.
I believe in gay rights. My church preaches acceptance of anyone regardless of his or her sexual orientation, although it believes the homosexual lifestyle is a sin. I do not quite agree with that. What I know definitely is that Jesus told us not to judge lest we be judged, and that is what I go by. I’m not gay, so it’s not my place to say what is right for them. There are a few lines in Leviticus that I do not pretend to understand, although I have some theories, but I would seriously digress if I went into them.
I believe in sexual purity, AKA abstinence until marriage. Once again, I don’t expect this out of my peers and the only other people who practice it that I know are from my church, so it’s not like I hate people who have promiscuous sex. Although I don’t think that’s safe anyway, but that’s a subject for a different blog.
I guess the point of this blog was to show you that not every Christian is a bigoted jerk. There are some of us who are and have given us a bad name, but I assure you it is not so for everyone or even the majority of Christians. And the purpose of this blog was not to say why I believe what I do; I don’t even want to get into that here.
God bless you all.
