Coldplay v. Joe Satriani
This is a blog about the coldplay v. Joe Satriani case. It's not all in my opinion, it's laying out the facts and possibilities so you can tell me yours. :]
The Story: Joe Satriani, one of the top guitarists in the world acording to multiple sources, has sued Coldplay for using a part of his song "If I Could Fly" for the chorus melody in their new hit song "Viva La Vida". There's no news on the exact case yet, but people have been taking sides depending on their view in the case. What side are you on?
Pro-Coldplay: On the side of Coldplay, there have been many songs that have probably been copied, yet no attention has been called to them. Metal, punk and hard rock is said to have some very common chord progressions and hard melodies. Many people say that they're the genres that have the most common sound. However, you don't of many suits against them. Not only that, but the melody of "Viva La Vida" is a pretty simple. People claim that it could've easily been a coincidence.
Pro-Joe: On the side of Joe Satriani, his song has, of course, come first. The melody itself actually isn't that simple to come up with when you consider the exact tempo, timing and key. It's also easy for Coldplay to get away with something like this since Joe isn't known by most of their listeners, so there was a good chance that nobody would notice. But Joe noticed. An artist like him, who has years and years of experience and being an expert wouldn't mess something like this up, people say.
Well, that's the whole story. I, personally, am on the side of Joe. I respect him a lot, and I don't think he'd make this up. But that's not what this blog is about. Below are three videos. The first is of Joe Satriani's "If I Could Fly". Listen to about halfway; I'm pretty sure that's where the melody plays. The second is of Coldplay's "Viva La Vida". If you've listened to Joe's song, you should notice where it matches.
What's YOUR opinion? Should Joe or Coldplay win the case?

i think they should combine the two songs and split the royalties. cause it sounds BAD ASS.
look up coldplay v. Joe Satriani on youtube, one of the videos plays both songs at the same time and it sounds SOOO cool.
=P
really, i think Satriani's song is similar to Coldplay's, but Coldpay made it into something new and different, it has a completely different instrumentation and vibe...I don't think Coldplay copied because they are good enough they don't need much help to make good songs =P
Songs are going to sounds similar...its not copying...cause its different =]
