Modern Warfare 2: No Russian-- Controversy

WARNING: THIS BLOG CONTAINS SPOILERS. BIG ONES.

Idk how many of you guys are gamers, but Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has definitely been one of the most anticipated games of the year and it is finally out. Personally, I haven't bought it yet because MY most anticipated game, Left 4 Dead 2, just came out and I bought that one instead...but I have played it and it is definitely at the top of my list of games to buy. I am a huge Call of Duty 4 fan, mostly for the online play. So I'm excited about Modern Warfare 2. I have played it several times already and the game play is AMAZING, so much better than CoD 4. ANYWAY, the subject of my blog is the controversial level titled "No Russian".

I haven't personally played the offline single player story mode of MW2 yet. I'm not sure I ever will because I'm more of an online player. I honestly have never finished CoD4 offline. But I have been so pumped for this game that I've been looking online for info about it and I came across an interesting controversy. There is a level titled "No Russian" that asks you to follow a man named Marakov through a Russian airport. Marakov and his men proceed to kill innocent civilians in the airport. You still have a gun and you have the ability to shoot the civilians as well but it is not required. You do have to shoot Russian SWAT teams and security guards, though, in order to survive. In the end Marakov shoots you and leaves you at the airport. The whole point was Marakov was trying to start a war between the Russians and Americans by leaving a dead American behind.

At the beginning of the game you are given the opportunity to cut this level out of the game. You can also skip this level at anytime while playing it with no penalty whatsoever.

I watched a video of someone going through this level and I have to say it is extremely disturbing. The guy who was playing participated in the killing of civilians. No one fought back, it was just bodies hitting the ground and terrified screams. There were even injured people dragging themselves across the ground. It made my stomach hurt to watch. I have to say that is the most terrifying thing I have seen in a video game. I don't know what I will do when I actually play through it myself.

As sick as it is, I think that this is perfectly OK to include in the game. The game is about WAR. This just makes it so much more realistic. Yeah, its terrible. But you ARE given the option to skip it. And it makes a really good point in the end. Your guy is following Marakov to get on his good side and he betrays him in the end and you find its all a set up against you. The game does not in any way condone the behavior of Marakov and the character gets nothing out of following him in the end because he dies. I think it teaches a very good lesson.

The footage is indeed chilling and very terrifying. The fact that its in an airport is even scarier. Infinity Ward did a very good job with this one, in my opinion.
