Global Warmning.
Why, you may not believe Global Warming is happening, but it's a widely spread issue across the world. We are basically destroying our planet. I for one like this thing called life. Now, to my point. Our world is getting too hot. The average temperature is beginning to rise. The Polar Ice Caps are melting. That causes the land that polar bears and penguins live on to melt. You may not know this, but polar bears HATE swimming. In a matter of time, polar bears could become extinct. Also, the melting of the Ice Caps could cause a massive flood. And what with all the pollution we create. We are destroying the Ozone Layer, which protects us from UV rays. The Day After Tomorrow may just be a movie, but it could actually happen in a few hundred years. We may not be alive, but or descendents will. Global Warming could destroy the world, and none of us seem to care.
I've decided that walking rather then driving cars to local destinations could just be the start to caring. Global Warming is inevetible at the moment, but I believe if we take small steps to stop pollution,we could begin to save our planet. Maybe it doesn't mean so much to you,but quite frankly, it means so much to myself and others.

But,we can help.

I'm not aruging with you,but i'm just saying
no one can tell the future and we have no idea if something like the Day After Tomorrow can happen, were not physcics.
It could happen, you never know. I'm not saying that I'm waiting for it, but you nor any scientist should make that asumption because in case you haven't notcied, we can't control the Earth and everything it does

wait_what, do you think I could add that to my profile?

I'm going to argue some of southernidiot's comment.
The earth go's through stages. It heats up, it cools down, it heats up, ect... When my dad was a kid, people were freaking out about the next ice age because temperatures were at an all time low. & The Day After Tomorrow is completely fictional and over dramatic. Nothing like that can happen that fast. Ask sane scientists.
Yes, the Earth does go through stages, but it is getting worse too quickly. Case in point: Coral Reefs. They're dying. Coral Reefs, although very adaptable, are very fragile creatures. The temperature of the ocean is heating up, and because of it, the reefs are getting sick and dying. However, since the earth naturally goes through stages, the reefs typically can adapt to it. But now... they're not. It's because the Earth is heating up too fast for them to handle it. Also, global warming DOES lead to ice ages. How do you think the first one was formed? Gases from the planet's core were escaping through the ground. Volcanic gases were also getting caught into the atmosphere. These gases became trapped and caused global warming over a loooong period of time. (Much longer than the speed the planet is heating up now) This caused the polar caps to melt, thus causing flooding. The ocean, which was hot, all of the sudden had TONS of ice dumped in it. This messed with the weather pattern, and in turn, caused huge storms over the oceans. The storms dumped tons of snow and ice on the planet- therefore: ice age. While DAT is fictional, it is fairly plausible based on the Earth's history.
And the planet goes through stages because of things like the El Nino and La Nina. But these stages are being formed because of our carelessness. Why? Because temperatures are still all crazy despite it not being an el nino/la nina season. This is why there are also so many damn hurricanes. The temperature of the ocean is causing massive storms off coasts, which turn into hurricane, which destroy retarded cities built on river deltas
The ozone layer rebuilds itself
The ozone layer doesn't "rebuild" itseld per se. It can handle certain amounts of OH, NO, Cl, and Br.Those elements are all naturally found in the ozone, but there is currently too much of them present in the ozone for it to be safe. Ozone layer depletion will cause UV rays to become more substantial. They already have. This is why there's been an increase in skin cancer and cataracts.
If polar bears and penquins die, then fine. Survival of the Fittest. Natural Selection.
Not fine. Each ecosystem is made with certain animals that are key factors to the ecosystem's survival. Once you lose a key animal, the ecosystem slowly starts to lose its ability to hold up. If penguins and polar bears were to die, then it could be assumed that mass amounts of fish would appear. Overpopulation. Overpopulation can lead to disease. Disease in fish could lead to human sickness, and then where does that lead to? A destroyed ecosystem with another ecosystem full of sickness. I'm not saying that penguins and polar bears are going to die, and I'm not saying that if they do that will happen.... But keeping these species alive are important to us.
Go me. AP Enivornmental Science and Purdue's Oceanography 104 really DID teach me things.

vv The Earth does go through stages, but the next predicted stage was not intended to be like this. For the last thousands of years the Earth's temperature has risen and fallen steadily; true. But over the past fifty years, the temperatures have been rapidly increasing.. much over the expected amount. I don't understand how people can say it's "normal" when the facts are right there. We did expect a rise in temperature.. but not THIS much. This is too much and it is killing thousands of people. :\

No,it's true they hate swimming. I saw this thing on the discovery channel with my dad.
And,I never agreed with Al Gore or anything. And these are not my political views,I don't have political views. I don't care for politics at 14.
ohmygodshutyourbutt, April 3rd, 2007 at 06:42:05am
You're right, the earth does go through stages, and there's no argument there, but this change is so dramatic it's very likely humans are the reason (or one of the reasons) for it.
And yes, Al Gore is a huge hypocrite, I'm not arguing that. But at least he's getting the word out to others about the crisis.
Once again, you're right, the ozone layer does rebuild itself. But we're depleting it so much we're almost at the point of no return.
Rainbows in the Dark, April 2nd, 2007 at 10:32:59pm
ok.. here I go on my rant again.
One: I seriously doubt polar bears HATE swimming. They can swim for miles and not get tired. Plus, they're completely experienced at it. What made you think otherwise.
Two: An Inconvienint Truth is fictional. And if it happens to be true, then Al Gore is one of the BIGGEST hypocrites out there. He uses twice as much energy in his mansion that an average household. I would show you the website to this info, but, i forgot it
Three: The earth go's through stages. It heats up, it cools down, it heats up, ect... When my dad was a kid, people were freaking out about the next ice age because temperatures were at an all time low.
Four: The Day After Tomorrow is completely fictional and over dramatic. Nothing like that can happen that fast. Ask sane scientists
Five: The ozone layer rebuilds itself
Six: If polar bears and penquins die, then fine. Survival of the Fittest. Natural Selection.
Seven: Don't mistake me as a wasteful person just because I say these things. I very much do so conserve energy and recycle. Yes.. really.
Eight: I really hope you said everything you did because it's what you truly believe, not because of your policitcal views.
southernidiot, April 2nd, 2007 at 09:47:28pm
Or Solar powered cars.
ohmygodshutyourbutt, April 2nd, 2007 at 08:55:32pm
There's actually cars other than hybrids that conserve energy - my teacher drives this car that runs on vegetable oil and he gets it from the restaurants around here. It's cool. =)
., April 2nd, 2007 at 08:32:22pm
I care. I care alot. My family wants to buy me a car, but I won't let them. I refuse to drive anything unless it's a Hybrid and I'm saving up for one.
I also recycle, turn off lights when they're in use, use energy efficient lightbulbs, even unplug my computer, tv, dvd player, and stereo when they aren't in use... because even if these things aren't being used, them being plugged into the socket still uses energy.
It's so simple to conserve energy, it really is.
Teenage.Assassin, April 2nd, 2007 at 07:15:18pm
Heh, forget about the US - in the summer of 2003, 35,000 people died in Europe.
That's not even two months.
I had to write a 4-page research paper on Global Warming a month ago. =)
., April 2nd, 2007 at 06:17:33pm
Some facts:
-Over the last century, temperatures have risen five degrees celsius
-If (and when) the glaciers melt, sea levels will rise. Coastal areas and island nations which constitute 30 percent of the world's population will cease to exist.
-With the ozone layer depletion, higher concentrations of ozone will be present in the atmosphere. Concentrations that are too high can cause chest pains, nausea, pulmonary congestion, and damaged lung tissue.
-Since 1966, approximately 1,120 people have died during heat waves in the Untied States.
"Imagine a warmer and wetter world in which infectious diseases such as malaria and yellow fever spread more easily. This is not some distant, worst-case scenario. It is tomorrow's forecast."
-Kofi Annan
Ha, I recently did a report on all this stuff.
Rainbows in the Dark, April 2nd, 2007 at 04:45:50pm
No,I have yet to see it.
ohmygodshutyourbutt, April 2nd, 2007 at 04:42:41pm
I agree. Have you seen An Inconvienient Truth? Everyone should see that movie. If it doesn't change your opinion on Global Warming, nothing will.
Good blog. :]
