Music is Beneficial to Students as They Complete Their Homework

Many students experience difficulty concentrating on their homework. To remedy this, they listen to music while working, claiming it helps them stay on task. Many parents believe that music distracts the student and, consequently, they would accomplish nothing. However, music is beneficial to students through extrinsic motivation and its abilities to relax and keep students focused.

Extrinsic motivation is perhaps the key factor in the argument. Extrinsic motivation is, essentially, to partake in education for reward or avoiding punishment. Students, bored with the monotony of nightly homework, seek music as a refuge or to enliven the tedious work. However, this may impede certain students' study habits, but it depends on the type of student.

For many students, listening to music relaxes him or her. I conducted a survey, which asks teachers, parents, and students whether they agreed that music is beneficial to students completing their homework and why. The majority of the students believed that music clears their mind after a stressful day's trials so they can focus. Other students added that, while listening to their favorite artists, they completed their homework with much more efficiency.

There are many drawbacks by listening to music during work. Some students and parents stated that, by listening to familiar material, he or she becomes diverted from work because said student values the song more than work. Instead, the student may choose to listen to unique music or soft music that would serve purely as background music. Many parents disapprove of students' lisetning to music while studying, which is recommended. Research shows that students perform pen-and-paper assignments better while listening to music. Students that listened to music during reading assignments could not concentrate as well as they would in an isolated area. However, some students prefer listening to music even while studying.

Music is beneficial to students, depending on the student and type of work assigned. It is recommended that students don't listen to music while studying to prevent distractions. Many schools support music in learning, and some even implement music in the classrooms. Music is playing greater roles in the lives of people everday.

- END -

I think it's a pretty important subject, because some parents are unreasonable by forcing their kiddos to be in an isolated environment while studying. In my case, it hurts me because then I lose concentration on the subject at hand. What do you guys think? And, on an unrelated note, was it a DECENT essay for eighth grade? I mean, except for my research report, I procrastinated and did all my essays the night before. Took a long time, but they came out ALRIGHT.

And right now I'm COMPLETELY lacking inspiration for another Survival Guide. Do you guys have anything you'd like to see? I'm gonna post regular Blogs for a while until I come up with another idea. I only have one other Guide in store, and then I'M ALL OUT.
