In what may be the most exciting news concerning Linkin Park as of late, legendary producer Rick Rubin (Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash) has been named as the official producer of the new Linkin Park record.

In a recent newsletter from Joe:

"We wanted to step it up as far as working with a producer and really try to create an atmosphere that will challenge us in different ways. We chose Rick Rubin because his credits alone speak a lot about his ability and his open-mindedness as a producer, working on everything from the old Def Jam, Beastie Boys and Run DMC, to Slayer, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I think the common denominator with all these groups is that they create great music through the years that has stood the test of time."

This is perhaps the huge announcement that Mike posted about on the Linkin Park Underground a few weeks ago. We will be sure to update you with more information as it becomes available.

Rubin will be co-producing the album along with bandmember Mike Shinoda, if what Billboard announced still holds true.

Joe's newsletter update has been posted on Linkin Park's website. He explains that the band is looking to change their sound up a bit, and therefore chose Rick Rubin as producer. Further, Joe expects the band to start touring this summer, meaning a May release date could still be possible.

Joe says:

"Right now we're in the experimental phase of the writing process for our new record. There is no solid direction yet, we're trying to be as eclectic as we can for the moment and then we'll see what stands out the most out of all the music we write, which will give us more of an identity to strive for.... We look forward to touring and sharing our new music with all of our fans, hopefully by this summer after our album is complete."

In a recent interview with MTV.com after the Grammy's, Linkin Park's Chester Bennington revealed that the album for his solo project Snow White Tan will be delayed until 2007, in order for him to further focus on his commitments with Linkin Park.

"It was a natural decision," the singer said. "My record can wait. A good record should still sound good two years from now."

In other news, the band further discussed their committments with producer Rick Rubin as well as how picking him as a producer came about.

"He has produced so many of our favorite records, of everybody's favorite records, he is just so versatile," Shinoda said. "Anybody who can work with the Beastie Boys, Run-DMC, Slayer, System of a Down, Dixie Chicks and Neil Diamond, for us, that is what our sound is based upon. We like to mix different things together in a seamless way and we think Rick is a guy who understands that,

"He's already given us some really great tips on new things just to get us excited about writing another record," Shinoda said. "One of the things he told of right off the bat is, 'Don't think of yourselves as this is what Linkin Park is supposed to be, you can be whatever you want to be. Write anything that comes to your mind that you like.' So I think the next record is really going to break outside the box. You will recognize it as a Linkin Park record, but something that takes it up a notch."

New pictures have surfaced from the videoshoot for Apathy's "The Winter", featuring Mike Shinoda in the backdrop. The pictures showed up on the Babygrande Records website, which is the record label Apathy is signed to. "The Winter" is the first single from Apathy's 'Eastern Philosophy' album, due March 21st.

In what's becoming an annual event, both Fort Minor and Chester's Bucket of Weenies cover band are set to perform at Club Tattoo's 11th Anniversary bash in April.

The official Club Tattoo site currently has April 1st as the concert date, while various other fansites have April 22nd as the actual date. The concert will take place at the ACME Roadhouse in Mesa, Arizona. We'll let you know once the date is confirmed.

Other bands expected to perform include DJ Z-Trip, Story of the Year, Dirty Heads, and Jada Pinkett Smith.
