I'm rather pleased to hear that Bob Geldof is holding Live Aid this year. It makes me so sad to see all the poor people in Africa etc. live in such terrible conditions and can't do anything about it. They say that the world leaders will end world poverty by 2015, but do you think that will happen?

I think a better quote would be 'World leaders could end poverty by 2015, but they propbably won't.'

What we have to remember is that there are some factors here that need to be sorted.

1. Their debts to other countries, alot of counties are still paying back the western world for money they borrowed. But now they can barely pay the interest that is being put on the already huge debts.

2. The governments are also keeping the people poor. They keep a lot of the money to them selfs and give none to the people. A lot of the aid that we send to these countries keep most of it for themselves. The leaders give it to who they want, and they only care about themselves and the army!

there are propbably more but I'm not sure. But I don't think that the world will end poverty but 2015, there just to selfish!

yes there is too much corruption in LEDC's governments - but you can only wonder would there have been so much corruption if their debts had been written off years ago - or if the money was just given to them from the start and not provided as a loan with a horrendous interest rate

I don't understand why the world is in debt, us MEDCs understand that those countries are in need, so why do they need to pay us back?

I don't believe they'll get rid of world poverty byt 2015 - they'll probably only be able to scratch the surface in 10 years the way they're going. I'm for scrapping the debt - otherwise they will never be able to afford to find their feet again and will continue in the vicious circle they're in at the moment. For every £1 you pay to an African child in aid they owe you £9 in debt. Tanzania has paid out more in debt then they have spent on their health service. Unless the MEDC governments cancel the debt the LEDCs will never recover.

The governments of countries like the UK (grrr) say they need the money. I can't remember what they spend it on - I read about it months ago.

Soon they're gonna make our country and all the other G8 countries poor, and as for Live Aid, the only thing im intrested in is seeing Maroon 5 at Hyde Park or wherever it is."

That's selfish, maybe she might be comfortable with how she is, and great, but there are people much worse off than her, thousands starve to death everyday in LEDC'S and the AIDS virus is killing more people a day than smoking. These people haven't done anything to deserve what they are living in, and surely they deserve better. Everyone is entitled to a certain amount of things (eg. food, water, shelter, clothes ect.) but these people are hardly getting any of these. Those acts for the live aid are doing it for the charities, and would probably be upset if their fans didn't give a shit about the world around them...

You realise that talking about it is pointless. If you want something to change YOU have to do something about it.
For example, write to your governmet or local pm or send the letters from the Make Poverty History website.
And I agree something must be done but before we takle poverty we have to get rid of corruption in these 3rd world countries. This, however, is harder than it sounds. When money is given in aid the 3rd world goverment takes the money and put it into buying arms and war.

I've sent emails to tony blair through makepovertyhistory.org. They get loads apparently cos the webbie sends it to you and you can sign it or change it to how you want to tell them and then send. It may not get read and it may not mean anything to them, but it shows people to want change because thousands are sent.

I'm not saying you havent done anything but apart from writing letters there is alot more to it. Try gettin involved with Concern or Oxfam or another organiseation.

As for writing letters you have to start from the bottom. Try writing letters to your local M.P. Thats what i did.

And like i said before to be rid of poverty we have to get rid of courruption first.

wow thats harsh! I mean they cant help it that there country has been put into poverty, i mean how would she feel if she was born into the conditions that people in LEDC's are suffering with? She would hate it and want help!
I think its great that finally the rich country leaders have got off their fat arses and decided to drop some of thier dept and help rebuild the countries

LEDC's, MEDC's...oooh its like being back in geography!
Personally, i dont think it is possible to totally rid the world of poverty, but atleast they could make sure the world is provided with medicine and education and all their other basic needs.

I mean theres millions living in poverty in the more developed countries but atleast the goverments are able to provide them with the essentials.

Poverty is something that will never end. If there is someone who has more money than another person, they'll always be poorer. Not that I don't want it to happen, I wish there could be no poverty, but I don't believe it can happen though. That doesn't stop me from trying to help.

Well said!

But someone asked me the other day if i thought that the money REALLY would go to poorer countries? Personally, I think it will, but what do you guys think?
