My friend just started smoking. He's old enough too, but I wish he didn't. It's nasty. Two of my uncles smoke and one of then had a heart attack and had to have open heart surgey. The other one is a heart attack waiting to happen. My grandfather died from lung cancer 'cause he use to smoke like A LONG TIME AGO, but he still got cancer and died.

It's not worth it.

You gotta die somehow. Granted, lung cancer is not a pleasant way to go. But each to their own. As long as people are smoking considerately and aren't affecting people who DON'T want to inhale second hand smoke, I have no problem with it.

So, I smoked for a while. Sure, it tastes great, but one thing that that bothers me:

Punks in the hardcore scene (something I'm into), used to have to run from the cops because they would raid a lot of shows, beating the shit out of the punks. Most punks would have to run away. You cant last running very long if you smoke a pack a day, or however long you smoke.Same thing with getting into punk for clothing purposes wearing like 4 different belts that can get hooked on a fence.

Thats my rant on smoknig and how it doesnt make sense for me to smoke a lot.

Just don't start smoking, and you can't really get addicted... or is that too simple?

Thats untrue. Not all situations are as simple as that. You body develops addictions are craving's for nicotine. You can end up hospitalized over the lack of it in your body. it can make you sick constantly. Thats why it's just better to never start at all.

Yeah, exactly! My mother smoked, and when she stopped, it was very hard for her. Even now, 4 years later she still has one (Like, maybe once, if that, a year, on a very stressful occasion, such as when my nana died), so whenever I see any around the house, I throw them straight into the bin.

But its just not as simple as that. Its incredibly hard to stop. The will power you need is extordinary. Its not just as simple as saying "I don't want to" because some do want to, they are just addicted to it, and can't stop.

Shouldn't you know better than to say something like that? I mean, haven't you ever had someone in your family or friends that smoked, and tried to stop?

Giving up something you're addicted to is hard for everyone, it's just that some people have the will power to do it and others fall at the first hurdle and decide not to bother trying again. Like my mum is a smoker and she says she wants to give up but her excuse for not doing it is "I've tried but I couldn't do it" and then I had this friend who was smoking 30 a day when he decided to just quit and go cold turkey, he didn't read any books about quiting, didn't buy any of those patches that wean you off nicotine; he just stopped. And he was a real bad tempered cunt for a few months but he never picked up a cigarette because he really wanted to quit.

i think that those patches are just a way of going from one addiction to another personally

That's really the only way now a days. I mean, 12 steps and AA makes you some preaching, Christian who's addicted to 'spreading the word' and teaching others not to do the same. Some addictions are worse than others I suppose.

when it comes addiction, you HAVE to go from one addiction to another

if you quit ciggarettes you'll wind up getting addicted to regular gum, if you quit heroin you wind up going to pot (since it's not as deadly

you just have to choose the lesser addiction

my Uncle went from alcoholism to smoking, and now he's trying to quit that
but it just runs in my family, the addictive personality
as his brother (my dad) puts it, "you could give him thirty apples, and by the end of the month he'll be addicted to apples"

hell, my dad was addicted to working out to cure his food addiction, and now I guess he just reads 24/7

doesn't sound like a drug addiction but it's all pyscological long after it's a physical addiction

when you quit one thing it's impossible not to become an addict of something else, it's all in the tranference of what you're dependant on

I'm really starting to Like Al Gore. Not as a political figure, but the same way you'd admire a cute puppy in the park with a stick.

Well ciggarettes do contain ingrediants that are dangerous to the atmosphere, their just in smaller proportions. But i'm sticking with the big gushing oil fields as the problem. There's enough greenery in the world to equalize ciggarettes. But yeah I understand your point.

I think that smoking is such an important part of society and it needs to be reduced but then again if smoking was just banned all together can you imagine the war and chaos it would be devistating!
