They only people I believe ever had the right to sue the tobacco companies were the people who started smoking when the government said there was nothing unhealthy with cigarettes.

So, if the government were the ones not putting the information out, how are the tobacco companies the ones to sue? They weren't breaking any laws at the time. And they weren't forcing people to smoke, it was still their choice.

Government controls all advertising, I guess. They should have stopped things like this

but they didn't. Nobody really knew better at the time, though. At least, I don't think so. So yeah, it was their responsibility, but they didn't know that stuff wasn't true.
And they weren't forcing people to smoke, it was still their choice.
I disagree with this. Nobody forced women to take Thalidomide, but they were told it was good for them, same as the cigarettes. It was all their choice to take the drugs, but later, everybody found out that the Thalidomide was bad for pregnant women.

Do all those kids that got born without limbs have no right to sue, 'cause nobody actually forced them to take the drug, it was still their (mothers) choice?

Its the same with tobacco smokers. Nobody knew of the risks at the time, so they didn't know it would harm them. It was still their 'choice', but it was a choice made on false evidence which was later disproved.

My mum says she's stopped smoking but I doubt she is cause one day she is and then the next day she suddenly stops, I don't think it's that easy, especially since I smoke in my room and the smell is probabaly throughout the house.

I don't smoke and I craze cigarettes
hell, I crave sex all the time and I'm a virgin
if he's gone three months then he's quit
unless you want to assume he'll get back on then he has "quit for now"
but then again, that's like saying, "they're married for now, but one of them has a single addiction"

life's short, why not? I mean, that'll probably cut it shorter, but if you don't have an "addictive" personality, then where's the harm? just don't try exercising after you do it, you'll feel like hell, especially if you're not in good shape.

Your personality hardly effects the dependency your body physically forms on nicotine.

Reasons for why cigarettes are so bad (quoted from Disinformation: 50 Things You're Not Supposed To Know)

Besides cancers of the head, neck, and lungs, ciggies are especially connected to cancers of the bladder kidney, pancreas and cervix. Newer evidence is adding leukemia and colorectal cancer to the list. Recent studies have also found at least a doubling of risk among smokers for cancers of the vulva and penis, as well as an eight-fold risk of anal cancer for men and a nine-fold for women

Smoking trashes the ability of blood flow, which results in a sixteen-fold greater risk of peripheral vascular disease. This triggers pain in the legs and arms, which often leads to inability to walk and, in some cases, gangrene and/or amputation. Seventy-six percent of all cases are caused by smoking, more than for any other factor, including diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure.

Smokers are at least two to three times more likely to develop the heartbreak of psoriasis. Even if that doesn’t happen, they’ll look old before their time. The American Council tells us, “Smokers in their 40s have facial wrinkles similar to those of non-smokers in their 60s.”

Smokers require more anesthesia for surgery, and they recover much more slowly. In fact, wounds of all kinds take longer to heal for smokers.

Puffing helps to weaken bones, soft tissues, and spinal discs, causing all kinds of musculoskeletal pain, more broken bones and ruptured discs, and longer healing time. “A non-smoker’s leg heals and average of 80 percent faster than a smoker broken leg.

Smoking is heavily related to osteoporosis, the loss of bone mass which relates to brittle bones and more breaks.

And let’s not forget that second-hand smoke has horrible effects on the estimated 42 percent of toddlers and infants who are forced to inhale it in their homes:

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), children’s " passive smoking,” as it is called results in hundreds of thousands of cases of bronchitis, pneumonia, ear infections, and worsened asthma. Worse yet, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 702 children younger than one year die each year as a result of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), worsened asthma and serious respiratory infections.

omgno ^^ That's awful. My dad has smoked for 40 years, but my mum has never touched one.

I smoked for about 7 years and then gave up. I have been off them for about a year. And it really doesnt bother me anymore, at all. I know I will never cave because it is just not worth it. I'm so glad I quit and I feel I can do anything after going through that.

I should've phrased that better. I meant more along the lines of becoming easily addicted to something. Or even addicted at all. I know people (friends, family) that have EASILY avoided addictions, just because they chose not to. They smoked all the time. But when they ran out of a source, or just decided to stop, then they did. They just flat out quit. that's what I'm talking about

I personally think smoking is horrible, but I won't give shit to anyone who does it.
My parents and my sister smoke and they've always told me it's horrible and I've seen the effects of long-term smoking on my parents. I will never touch a ciggarette. I think smoking should be illegalized and decriminalized. The problem with cigarrettes is that the companies took something (tabacco) and put a whole bunch of nasty chemicals into it and sold it in a stick form. I hate how they advertize it, too.

I have a problem with people blowing smoke in someone's face (like when my brother was copying a movie scene and he took a hit, blew it in my face, and said "F*ck off"omgno), and I have a problem when people smoke around pregnant girls or around people that ask them not to. Or if they're young kids that are smoking. Rolling Eyes

Other than that, I don't care if people smoke. In my opinion, they should know what could possibly happen and if they still smoke after learning about it, it's their funeral.

That's just how I feel. Meh.

I hate smoking, I never have smoked and never will.

I don't stay around people who smoke, but it's their choice.

I just don't see anything good that comes out of it.

I was a social smoker for.. eh, 4 months

But like... I don't see a point, and I don't want to be addicted to something like cigarettes.

I told one of my friends that I don't want to smoke any more, that I think it's stupid.
She was just like, "Be a social smoker. It's nothing to be embarrased about." Rolling Eyes
