Religion and violence

Its reads really smooth when you drive past "Religion wasn't meant to cause violence, would your God accept your worship?" discuss I believe that without religion ever exisiting we would not be in the hellish world crisis we are in today. Religion is something some ancient prat (obviously in the bigger picture, not a prat, but a very clever leader... and also more than one) made up to control his/her people, and thanks to them, people are bombing the fuck out of each other right left and centre. I am biased because i'm not religious, and i understand that it helps people with peace of mind etc, but surely if you want to believe in something higher and omnipotent, then you can do it for yourself and "speak" to that divine being in your own way. Faith is the most personal thing, and i think its wrong for people to have it preached at them. Especially when the preachers are brainwashing. Without religion we would still have race-hatred, but manipulative leaders would not have "the word of God" to control their people with. |
spill_no_sick Falling In Love With The Board ![]() Age: 31 Gender: - Posts: 8588 | I believe you're also going along with the anti-religion trend religion is simply an authority, my authority is the Christian God, and his book inspired by his words and quit using things as scapegoats, don't blame shit on religion, if everyone followed the same religion there'd be no violence, it's the freedom of religion that's causing conflict, you just believe that your religion is better, and everyone believes that about their own religion, and athiesm does count, it's putting your authority in earthly things such as the media, your own gut instincts, culture, etc. so religion is a factor, but it's not to blame |
zdf_jammin Geek ![]() Age: - Gender: - Posts: 432 | spill_no_sick: yea, shame, its not to blame. i think if everyone was a christian, like they should be, everything would be happy, because Jesus says so, and it actually makes perfect sense. if we all believed in the same God, everyone would be ok. but theres always got to be some rebel or whatnot who doesnt want to, so it cant be that way. and even if i was a founding father, i probably would ahve said freedom for religion also, because im not so christian that i think that it should be a law to be one, or that the US should be a theocracy, but i dont agree with the fact that we are at war with Iraq because they are a theocracy of Islam, and thats dumb for someone to say. |
GangControl Jackass ![]() Age: - Gender: - Posts: 1146 | Quote And there we have it, the problem. Religion is the cause because the people who are religious are too wrapped up in their religion to see the bigger picture. And indeed, in religion there is no bigger picture. Everyone wouldn't follow the same religion though, because people want to do things differently. And if EVERYONE followed the same thing, we'd all be a bunch of mindless zombies. That would maybe even cause more violence for people trying to get out of the religion which everyone is following. And then theres leaders... how do you elect a supreme leader for one supreme religion without violence? Then those leaders can use "Gods word" from the book supposedly written on his thoughts, to root out the heretics, or, in english, those they simply don't like. You turned it into an interesting discussion[/u] |
zdf_jammin Geek ![]() Age: - Gender: - Posts: 432 | GangControl: the problem there is that you took it totally out of context=misquoting. thats my personal idea, there is no way in hell i know that that would actually happen, or that i think that people should try to make the world that way. i do agree though with missionaries going over to africa to spread the word of Jesus, because i think its them that need it most. its the different religions that make this world interesting, but saying that we would be blindy following things because were all the same i disagree with, each person still has their own little different churches of God, and we all interpret the Word differently. i dont really think that everyone should all be christian, but to me thats an ideal world. |
spill_no_sick Falling In Love With The Board ![]() Age: 31 Gender: - Posts: 8588 | athiesm is a religion too, and you're portraying it as a bunch of one-sided assholes the problem is that not all of us follow the same thing if we were all athiest, all Budist, all Jewish, the world would work fine, but people like you have to rebel, not take responsibility for their own actions, and use stuff as scapegoats |
Anji Basket Case ![]() Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 15914 ![]() | My dad is Muslim, I am Christian, my sister and mom are Buhddist. But we aren't going around setting booby traps in the house trying to kill each other. If people could believe what ever the fuck they wanted but at the same time be open minded, then we could all get along. |
zdf_jammin Geek ![]() Age: - Gender: - Posts: 432 | Anji: BUDDHA! im sorry, but that is definitly the coolest name ever. yea, but the difference with your family is that your a family. even in my family there are times when we disagree about our own faith, im sure they'res times like that in your family, about faith talks. if not, then thats just wierd. |
NeoSteph Basket Case ![]() Age: 37 Gender: Female Posts: 16494 ![]() ![]() | From the age of 5 i have gone to a roman catholic school a religion that i don't believe, i've never lost faith in god but this is what i say Religion is man made, and man is far from perfect. |
NeoSteph Basket Case ![]() Age: 37 Gender: Female Posts: 16494 ![]() ![]() | spill_no_sick: if we were all the same it would be bloody boring and i wouldn't have anyone to argue with *pushes nick* |
Anji Basket Case ![]() Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 15914 ![]() | zdf_jammin:Well, actually my mom and dad almost divorced over religion. When I was seven my dad converted. But he's taught my mom to be a little more open minded. See we used to live in Indonesia during the whole government thing when there was a lot of violence and that left a bad impression on my mom for a while. |
zdf_jammin Geek ![]() Age: - Gender: - Posts: 432 | well if your roman catholic.. o wait, you dont believe in it, nvm. the catholic religion was founded by Jesus, theres proof in the bible. saying peter would be the cornerstone of His church, and peter was the first pope. "st peters basillica." though, of course, the catholic religion doesnt have a clean history, but then again, neither does any other relgion or denomination. changes have been made by man that have influenced the church and changed. what people dont realize that all christian answers really do lie in the bible. |
NeoSteph Basket Case ![]() Age: 37 Gender: Female Posts: 16494 ![]() ![]() | zdf_jammin: are you talking to me ![]() The roman catholic faith is too constricted, and your right the beginning and the end are in the bible, you just need to know how to read it. |
zdf_jammin Geek ![]() Age: - Gender: - Posts: 432 | NeoSteph: yea, im RC too, i dont totally agree with everything, it is very uptight, and a lot of it i think is about humans being too lazy to figure things out for themselves, and everything to for the humans to do what is right without having to think about it. like confession. really, you just need to feel deep regret and humiliation towards what you did, and confess to God, but a lot of humans dont feel that, and i think thats why they started that sacrament, to make humans feel deep regret, but i dont think it doesn anything anyway. |
NeoSteph Basket Case ![]() Age: 37 Gender: Female Posts: 16494 ![]() ![]() | zdf_jammin: i'm with the 'cool' crowd, i've lived the rc life and hated it, basically being told that your a sinner from the age of 5 is not a way to start your life. I went pentecostal, then methodist. Nothing fitted my beliefs. So i'm a christian but i don't practise any religion. I left my church because it became a business not a place of worship. The most afraid i've ever been is when i visited one of my friends churches, they were flipping extremist ![]() The problem with religion is it is easily turned into something else. if people just follow the fundamental laws of god then as far as i'm concerned you have a reservation in heaven. |
zdf_jammin Geek ![]() Age: - Gender: - Posts: 432 | exactly-hence being saved. ive never heard anyone talked about being saved in RC church. i dont think they believe in it |
NeoSteph Basket Case ![]() Age: 37 Gender: Female Posts: 16494 ![]() ![]() | zdf_jammin: The whole idea of purgatory and how un-baptised babies end up there, it's too much doom and gloom. The final straw for me was when the vatican announced in Africa that condoms do not prevent the chance of catching HIV but can spread the disease, which is complete bs. |
zdf_jammin Geek ![]() Age: - Gender: - Posts: 432 | they probably said it because logically, with condoms you have more sex!! thats it pope, everyones having sex all the time! you really think thats the problem. no, its guys raping little girls thinking they can rid the disease. you know what, i really have been struglling with my faith, whether to say christian or catholic? |
NeoSteph Basket Case ![]() Age: 37 Gender: Female Posts: 16494 ![]() ![]() | zdf_jammin: it's a matter of choice, which is the whole point of faith in the first place. I really liked the last pope, purely because he welcomed harry potter *sad i know* The new one, well time will tell. |
zdf_jammin Geek ![]() Age: - Gender: - Posts: 432 | guess what, if he has problem with a childrens book, shame on him. whats wrong with children being able to dream about a better world? is it sinful to dream? |
