Forming in the midst of 1995, H.I.M., a Finnish rock band, is often more widely known for their symbol, the heartagram. “We’re the first band on earth more well-known for its symbol than the actual music,” says vocalist Ville Valo.


H.I.M, originally standing for His Infernal Majesty, a pseudo-satanic name, started out as a Black Sabbath tribute band, but now play their own songs, which have been described as similar to Sisters Of Mercy and The Mission U.K. The band, as well as their fans, categorize their music as “love metal,” playing melodious rock songs of love, death, and the good and evil of both.

Songwriter and vocalist Ville Hermani Valo was the band’s founder, alongside Migé Amour on bass, Lindé Lindström on guitar, Gas Lipstick on drums, and Zolten Pluto on keyboards. The E.P. and first release by the band, 666 Ways To Love, showed up in 1996 and acquired a considerable amount of attention in Scandinavia. Just one year later Greatest Love Songs, Vol. 666, which featured a cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game,” firmly established their cult fallowing in Scandinavia. Three years later, in 2000, H.I.M’s second album, Razorblade Romance, was released and supported by a full European tour, achieving an even larger and growing following. It was after the release of Razorblade Romance that Zolten Pluto left the band and was replaced by Emerson Burton.

Their third release arrived in 2002, Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights, and a year later was followed by Love Metal. H.I.M’s earlier records, however, were not released in America until 2005 by Universal Records. Their latest album, and first official US debut, is Dark Light.

Yea, my sister is going to their concert with me and she only likes like 4 of their songs, so shes not going to be too happy to wait like 5 hours to get into the concert......my parents think that they're extremely weird, and barely let me go to the concert

One of my friends thought the heartagram stood for the devil....i set her straight
Everyone I talk to assumes that they're like a screaming band(which their is nothing wrong with), but i tell them its love metal, it really surprises them, especially since im not into love songs at all...but HIM is an exception

When I wear my HIM shirts, people ask me who it is, I say "a band", and their like "ookkkaayyyy...", then i say "they're from Finland", and that automatically explains to them why they dont know who the hell they are.....i get snickered at too because everyone in my school thinks that they're like sellout/posers or something

I was like "Uh, yeah..." and then there's this moment of realisation where if it were possible a lightbulb would have appeared over his head and he says loudly, "OH! Villie Vaylo's band... They're Norwegian right?''

I couldn't help myself. "It's said 'Veelay Varlo' and they're FINNISH."
