Advertising

We were having a debate in my media studies class today about whether advertising was a bad thing due to the fact that it works on people's insecurities and basically manipulates people. What do you guys think?

course it does thats the whole point of advertising.
it toys with people emotions and insecurities.
it makes people think " if i had that my life would be better" thats what advertising is for.
just took at the lynx add with the guy who gets all the girls by smelling good.

Yeah, to me it seems just a bit far fetched, but it seems to work. People believe in these things.

my computer teacher (in his twenties) just got out of the War on Terrorism last year and he was showing us pictures

these kids were eating leftover bread off their dirt floor, and, though it was in a different language I could still tell what it was, they were drinking Pepsi out of a can!!!!

I think commercialism is absurd, some advertisment is alright...to hell it is, nevermind

fuck it, I've never seen one (other than my friend's "magazines"

they can't advertise on TV or at major events....but I've smoked...mainly because of the gay anti-smoking advertisement
do you think it's fair to allow anti-smoking (not only that, but to pay top bucks for it, and cause all the stuff in Health books, saying it's bad, not a risk, but that you have to say no) and not allow actual cigarrette advertisements?

I think it's all a bit too over the top. They've got specific regulations but recently they haven't really been sticking to them. Especially in some adverts where they stick to these insulting stereotypes about people and where they use sex to sell even things like hoovers and stuff.

I don't mind what people used to advertise, it doesn't offend me, i just think it's sad that people buy into it (myself included)

advertisement makes up a large part of a country's economy, because these brands pay alot to have it, so i say let them spend their money.

Oh, and those advertisements for "Tag" and "Axe" body spray drive me up the wall. It pretty much says "spray this under your pits, and girls will wanna screw ya!"

Meh. They want to sell their products.
Duh they're going to make their things sound cooler or better than they actually are. That's the point of advertising, to sellll their item. O_O

i think advertising is gross! i mean... if you live in a city you cant look anywhere without seeing advertisements.. you cant escape it even if you dont want to see it. and then some people get money to have advertisements stuck in your face. advertisement in newspapers, catalogs and in stores is ok.. but not on the street.. in my opinion of course...

I ranted about Axe on one of my journals
now I think they're funny....any guy who believes that's the way to get a woman is a dumbshit and will find out he's gay in the near future (which means he'll still enjoy the commercials)

Consumerism and commercialism are a huge society... Society moves on. Advertising isn't a bad thing, at the end of the day, they have to sell their products. If , for example, somethings going to help those insecurities, i don't think thats so bad. Products could even work as a placebo. What is bad is the ridiculous vast amounts of money within the buisiness that rest on, say, one persons head.

Large corporations are part of todays world, we just need to accept that, and learn how to fight them when they exploit people (and keep the smaller buisiness's running). However, advertising isn't exploiting, you don't HAVE to go out and buy the product. The advertising may influence your opinion, but if you were so dead set against something, you wouldn't buy it.

i really hate how they basically use sex for everything and anything. a pxt phone, for instance. yeesh

I think it minipulates {sp?} people.....Ex. people who are over weight see a diet pill commercial and are lead to believe that they will look like the model holding the bottle

and it makes me sick that everything is now going the sex sells route

Advertsing is fine. Without it you wouldn't know when your favorite band was coming to a town near you...

Some ads disgust me, yes, but that's just how they choose to sell their products/services/ideas. And I'll choose not to buy it.

also they almost always show women acting stupid....like the commercial where the lady is driving and doing EVERYTHING wrong....talking on the cell phoone putting on make up..........

i have nothing against advertising...only the ads which are completely untrue and are designed for morons who can't tell the difference...anyone seen the Lynx 'Spray more, get more' ad?...yeah
