Marriage to me= an unnecessary tradition.
Not for me.
Its also a legal binding, a lawful declaration, a necessary piece of paperwork.
I don't get why people must make a huge fuss about it being a 'Civil Partnership'. Oh no, not a marriage, heaven forbid.
They both amount to only one thing, a legal declaration, thats all.
I think everyone has a right to that legal declaration...
but marriage is different from civil-partnership, it's not just a unity between two people.
Marriage binds you to your partner and to GOD it's a religious ceremony and it's unfair to that religion to force them to allow acts to take place in their church that they do not believe in.
So you don't think Gay christians exist?
Where do they stand on this?
They can't help but love their god and love their partner, too...
Seriously, how many people might not believe in God but they still got 'married' or whatever you call it when two hetrosexuals get legally binded nowadays. A lot. Its okay to call a heterosexual couple married, even if they're both aggressive atheists you'd have no problem calling them that. But when it comes to gays everyone gets so touchy...
Their is a Gay Christian church close to St.Louis (where I live) and It's so horrible how anyone who attends that Church gets treated. People seriously have nothing better to do on Sundays then line up the walk ways and yell Fag and Queer, harrassing them. It's on the news every now and then, I find it funny when they say they are not real Christians, and then they go around and riot and promote so much Hate. It's ridiculous.
Sorry I got off topic.
but it was actually interesting ..

I don't where that came from, if people want to get married in a court house fair enough, if they want to marry in a church I think they should have a faith, it's only right as i've said before marriage is a partnership between you, your partner and god, if you don't believe in god you don't believe in marriage
if it doesn't pop on the bit it's supposed to, scroll down to marriage and religion.

I'm sure Gay christians exist, but i'm also sure that the bible does not take to kindly to homosexual pairing. Christians faith is formed ont he bible, who are we 5000 years after it being written to re-write waht god has put down in law for us.
It is not right to allow homsexuals to marry in church, it goes against the law written down for the church, How is it fair to change someones religion because it's not necessarily politically correct anymore
If I knew of a aggressive atheists being married in a church then I would call them on it and ask them to justify why if they do not believe their being married in the eyes of god.
And for every bible passage you can find 10 more to contradict it.
Plus, a church is really just a buliding.
My parents are married...or maybe they aren't. Actually, thinking about it, even though they are both heteroseuxal they can't be if thats how you put marriage. Wow, 18 years gone to waste.
I just can't see why don't call it a 'marriage'.
It means the same, virtually. No were in a dictionary does it say you have to be 'married' in the eyes of God.
You Don't have to be married in a Church and you don't have to believe in Christianity to get married if you're heterosexual, so why should being homosexual effect that. I agree with you that it does go against christianity, and I think Churches should have every right to refuse to marry Gay Couples, but they can still be Christian and Gay. being gay is a sin, every christian sins, why is this so different. Even though it goes against religion, their is a seperation of Religion and State. I think Homosexual couples should still be allowed to get married, with the same sytem as heterosexual couples. The fact that they are not is discrimination.

Technically only if you have gay sex.
Being gay in itself isn't a sin.
Everything else i'm agreeing with 100%.

The church is much more than a building to those who attend it, it's a place of worship, of solitude, a place of safety of community. to call it just a building is rather unfair.
And about atheist being married in church, it would be easy to lie about loving god and having a faith if your hetrosexual, if two men walked in it's a bit more tricky, they might have religious beliefs but the church lives it's life by the laws of the bible and allowing two men or women to marry in churchs isn't right.
Ah because the dictionay can never be wrong, people who live their life by the bible well they live by a contradictory system but the dictionary oh no. if the dictionar doesn't believe marriage is anyway religious I guess i'll go worship the god of oxford.

if you get married in a court room it's technically a civil partnership but called marriage because thats the norm of society.

Who says they have to get married in a Church? Any Church should have the right to refuse to do something that goes against it's policies. You don't have to get married in a Church.

so when i say marriage I mean in a church.
You get the exact same marriage Liscence as you do when you are married in a church.

Homsexual people in Britian can now have the same rights of married couple, they just can't do it in front of a church because the Vicar decides who or who can't marry in that said church.
So it's not discrimination anymore, they have the same rights and vicars turn down hetrosexuals couples to.

thats because the liscense part is the government seal of approval, the court room part of it.
in a church wedding theres alot more religious involvement, hence why court room weddings are shorter.

The church is a materialistic place, a geographical point. The house of god is not a geographical place, it is a place within you. I don't think you need to be in a church to feel close to your god, but I don't know how you god operates so i'll just go with whatever. If you can feel united within your own partnership with another then legal declarations shouldn't have to happen, but sadly with the law as it is it does.
And Steph please take this in the best of humour but as a non-believer at least I can see the dictionary
Sorry. That was kinda innapropriate.

God is everywhere and you feel his strength within you, now imagine you felt the same and you were in a room where another 200 people had the same feeling, I go to an evangelical church so there alot of hand waving and shouting, the Church community is a place of strength.

The church bit wasn't offesive.
Look, you can love god wherever you go, and steph has a point about unity but when you take away the people, take away the belief, its just bricks. Without the churchgoers the church is nothing.
I spent 13 years of my life going to church and before I even knew what atheist meant i never felt anything. It wasn't special, just a place to pray and as long as you hold the right state of mind a church is unimportant.
The dictionary point was supposed to be tongue in cheek...

Ok, I know that was the part meant to be tounge and Cheek, I was saying that a Church is alot more than what you said to those who believe in it, which was a different point altogether.
Zen Buddhism's only restriction on where to meditate is a suggestion to sit with your face towards a wall, or a corner, or something of that nature. Other'n that, who cares? You're practicing. That's all that really matters. the same goes for church; if you wanna pray, pray. Churches are great because they give people an organized place to worship; but they're not the be-all-end-all by any means. So as of now, i throw in my lot with Meg.
