Age: 34 Gender: Female Posts: 42834 | December 8th, 2006 at 10:51am From Kerrang! magazine, a review of LTJ with Dropkick Murphys and The Living End on 11.11.06 at Brixton Academy. They gave them 3/5:
With their highly likeable combination of Green Day's melody and AC/DC's show-manship, The Living End should - ideally - be headlining tonight. Chris Cheney's rockabilly-infused trio are sharper than ever and their biggest tune, "Prisoner Of Society" (the biggest selling Australian single of the '90's, no less) is just one of the dozen belters unleashed with furious intent.
But punk is a funny old scene, one where the majority doesn’t always plump for the best bands and where an American accent means a lot. Like a cod-eyed drunk belching Guinness in your ear for an hour, Dropkick Murphys are both misty-eyed and wilfully boorish; a durable, Americanised vision of UK Oi! And Irish folk that’s about as authentic as Scorcese’s “Gangs Of New York”. The fact that most of their songs are essentially bar room variations of Sex Pistols “Friggin’ In The Riggin’” doesn’t seem to bother anyone here. And while a cover of The Whos’ “The Kids Are Alright” is ill-advised, an all female stage invasion for closer “Spicy’s Jig” shaves the heavily macho edge off and saves the day. The love reserved for this band by both hard men in kilts and teenage girls is undeniably impressive, even if their posturing is occasionally chucklesome.
You could drop a dirty bomb on Less Than Jake and they’d still come out skanking and smiling in their shorts and T-shirts. Their status as something approaching scene leaders today is surely down to the basic fact that the Floridians have stuck around. Nothing more, really. Relentlessly “ and often disturbingly “ perky, their sound and lyrical approach remains a Prozac-stuffed 14 year-old boys vision of the world (Evidence? Songs about sweeties; drummer Vinnie Fiorello running not only a toy company but also signing the likes of Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco to his Fueled By Ramen label).
While “Sugar In The Gas Tank” is like Rocket From The Crypt on ecstacy “ no bad thing “ the new single “P.S Shock The World” decent enough inoffensive ska-pop, the half hearted attempts at wackiness via a wig or two courtesy of horn player Buddy Schaub soon begins to grate. That Less Than Jake are a slick live band who push all the right buttons and control a crowd with ease is not in dispute. That their endlessly cheery knees-up is essentially a one-dimensional imitation of better bands and is as groundbreaking as a busted jackhammer is certainly up for discussion. A strong bill tonight then, but few surprises. |

Al's War and Suburban Myth would also be good.
