In the why's and wherefore's
And maybe the answer has something to do
With the way her skirts clings to her hips
Or the way that she laughs, loud and brash
When nothing is funny except something only she knows
And she won't share, because that something is just for her
A secret, if you will, and she's always been good at keeping them.
But if you ask her nicely, then maybe, just maybe
She'll curl up in the passenger seat of your car
And tell you a story that only makes sense to the two of you
Cause on those sort of days, you can reach out
And trail a hesitant finger down the soft skin of her cheek
And she'll let you,
Simply because you and her have that 'sometimes' sort of love
And you make her feel safe, which is all she really wants.
And you'll pretend you don't see those bruises
And you'll pretend you don't know her boyfriend left them there
And you'll pretend that it doesn't bother you,
Knowing that as she gets out of your car
With a stiff smile on her lips and fear in her eyes,
That he'll be sitting there, waiting, fists clenched.
And you'll never quite understand what she sees in him,
And you'll hate him, and hate the bruises on her now-pale skin
But you know all you can do is wait for those days,
When she runs up to you with a smile and a laugh,
And begs for you to take her out to lunch, even if it's only fast food
Cause those are the only days when you know she's safe. |
