Deep Purple pretty much invented heavy metal (it was either them or Ozzy), and they've proven to be highly influential and enduring over the years. Their 1972 album "Machine Head" is one of THE MOST important albums in all of heavy metal and british rock. I wouldn't say the album's very well known, but 3 of the 7 songs are timeless rock anthems, they are:Highway Star, Space Truckin', and last, but certainly not least, the mother of all guitar riffs:"Smoke On The Water". The album is one of the best of all time. You just HAVE to listen to "Highway Star" to hear how awesome it is. Some also believe this song was the beginning of speed metal:

I also wanna check out the stuff they did with David Coverdale, and I'd like to check out that album Ian Gillan did with Black Sabbath (1983's Born Again).

I have Space Truckin' and Smoke on the Water on my iPod, haven't heard the other song. I'm JUST getting into them, only downloaded about six songs by them. They sound good though! Pretty sure I'll like them Dance

Managed to see the remaining members at a concert a few years back.

They still have it. Cool

They were one of the bands that I grew up with, because my dad LOVED them.

Hell yeah!

I love the 1972 lineup. My favourite songs are Pictures of Home and Lazy. Cool

Machine Gun has got to be one of the most kickass albums ever made.

Woo! ELO!!! Amen.

Deep Purple are aweshome. I got into them when i learned to play 'Smoke on the water' but had never heard the song, so i went and bought 'Deep PurpleRazzlatinum Collection' and it has a load of live tracks on and stuff and... yeah. Ish cool.

I love 'Child in time' and 'The Battle Rages On'.

I love Smoke On The Water. We actually used the guitar riff for our radio play... it was kind of corny because it was supposed to be all pumped up because the guy was gonna murder his wife... but it was cool nonetheless. That's the only song I actually know by them.

Live in Japan is one of the best live albums ever made. Up there with Thin Lizzy's Live and Dangerous, definitely.

Lots of people don't know a lot of their songs. They only know the riff for Smoke on the Water, it's like the best and most famous riff ever.
