My friend is in foster care, and she always brags about how I'm going to have to pay dozens of thousands of pounds to study where I want to and how she gets it for free, with a flat. She's really stuck up and she really pisses me off.

But I'm not saying all foster kids are like that at all, so don't get me wrong. Wink I'm just saying she always brags about it and stuff. I know that some foster kids won't even bother staying in school, and some will know their benefits and keep them to themselves.

What's your opinion on this? Smile

She lives in a foster home with a family. There's one other foster kid with her and then the foster couple. Being Human (if you know that TV show) was filmed in her house last year xD

I'm not sure, I know she's lived with them for quite a long time and she still sees her biological family.

then no if they didn't adopt her than who is expected to pay for her school? i'm sure she didn't choose to be in a foster home so not giving her opportunities that other children who live with their families get is cruel.

But are parents expected to pay for education? I don't know what it's like in Ontario but here you pay after you've graduated, when you get a job that earns over £25,000 a year and you pay back a low percentage per year. Smile

I personally don't think it's fair. She still gets to see her parents, and had the opportunity to go back but chose not to, she still sees her family around 3/7 days a week. Her foster parents get paid to keep her and get free holidays. She goes on holidays pretty much every two months. She gets a free flat / house / apartment when she's 18.

I know that a lot of kids in foster care are treated badly, and she's lucky. I just don't think anyone should get a free education (I mean anyone, foster kids and non-foster kids), especially if they are better off financially than a lot of other people.

yeah parents pay for education here and if they can't you have to get financial assistance (which most people do).

do you know the reason why she was put in foster care? do you know her whole story?

Her dad was physically abusive, her brother and sister were taken away from their mother too, but they moved back after the dad had left. But the girl chose to stay and sees her family, minus the father.

i don't think she should be bragging about it, but i don't think you understand the psychological damage she must have experienced from being abused and taken away from her parents. i don't really understand why you care about if she gets school paid for her. it just seems to me like you're experiencing some kind of jealously that she gets all of that stuff.

I was taken away when I was a baby so I don't remember it, but my sisters and brothers do. We were taken away for the same reason as her.

I'm not judging my opinion just on her. I think it's unfair that they get free university, knowing people who are poorer than them have to pay £30,000 or over. It's not like we have to pay it straight away after leaving, we pay it back at a percentage after getting a job, so why should they get it for free knowing that they could pay it back?

I have an online friend who's in foster care and thinks it's unfair too, he's moved from house to house and has no intention of going to university though.

I think it is partially jealousy but also my view on independent-ness.

And before I answer, can I ask, are you from the UK?
As I am aware that it is a lot less common here for parents to pay for their children's education.

In my country no one pays for education, it's free and compulsory until university. Isn't that what public school is for?
Usually only private colleges etc. require a fee.

Yeah, in my country, all education is free, including university. We actually get paid to go to school lol..
Granted the taxes are high but everyone has a fair chance

Do you live some where that is communist?
I don't want that to sound dumb, but as I understand communism, you get to school free....then again though, you don't get to pick what you do...so maybe not...erg.

Sorry if it's a dumb question.

indeed a stupid question
having a free education doesn't make a country communist.
it's a fairytale that american government has put into your brain

Communism is of course brilliant, but back to our topic.
No. Actually most countries in Europe offer free public system education. I am from Romania, but I live in England at the moment.
So basically in Romania, most people go to public schools, which are funded by the government. In England, I don't know exactly, but I think that state schools are free, though not sure if they are popular or not.
In Romania, as well as Italy, Spain and most European countries you study pretty much the same curriculum, so basically somehting called IB or International Baccalaureate.
I don't know, but I'm pretty used to the concept of free education as well as free health care and stuff, even though they seem quite abstract in countries like USA or whatever.

Yes. How else would they receive education? I mean they obviously can't pay for it themselves so the state needs to cover the costs.
The point was that the question is irrelevant for countries where everyone is getting free education.
