Ol' Blue Eyes. King For A Couple Of Days

| June 19th, 2006 at 09:37am And some people say summer's all about the beach
But they politely beg to differ
And they would insist that summer is less about waves and sand
And more about the lazy days that they spend together
Curled together on his trampoline in the sunshine
With his radio turned up too loud
And the smell of suntan lotion and sweat in the air.
And some people would say that summer's all about the sports
But they politely beg to differ
And say that summer's about the cool air-conditioned mall
And the time spent there with friends
Giggling over nothing, and buying clothes they'll wear out
In mosh pits and bars
And clothes that they'll rip sneaking out of windows
As they fade into the cool summer nights.
And some people would say that summer's all about families
But they'd politely beg to differ
And insist that summer is about friends
And the jokes that only they'd understand
And the memories of laughter and bare-shoulders and smiles
Memories of the hours spent together, doing nothing and everything
All at once.
And some people would say that they're a disgrace to their families
But they'd politely beg to differ
And say that they've spent all summer with their families
Laying out on his trampoline with the radio turned up too loud
With acoustic guitars and drumsticks in their calloused hands.
Telling dirty jokes and laying close
Wearing dirty clothes, running around with bare feet
And swimming in his pool with their clothes on, and then off.
And they'll smile proudly, when asked what they've done all day
And say loudly, I was with my friends. |

I really absolutely love that.
There's this deep sense of simple beauty in it
but then this rebellious truth that seems to shine through.
I love it especially:
And clothes that they'll rip sneaking out of windows
As they fade into the cool summer nights.
And the fourth stanza and the ending. |
