stream down her face, still watching her
jazz-bar serenade play with fingers that
unlocked every song beneath her skin.
She had trembled under smokey moonlight
as he coaxed melodies from her monotony
and dreamt of his cobalt eyes burning
inside her. He had played her in saxophone
soliloquys, breathed her through brass bands
before releasing her as the perfect melody.
And now she pines on Broadway's city limits,
remembering the keys and silver-lined success
that coaxed him away. She still lives in her
thoughts as his blasé ballad, scratched and
repetitious from rejection. But she keeps the
choruses he wrote on her and lip-synches with
every touch while she suffers through solos and
the scale of goodbye in her acoustic heartbreak. |
