 | June 29th, 2007 at 10:37am Well, that's one approach, but in the 80's loads of buses in Nottingham had condom advertisements and a picture of the Grim Reaper in the background with all these dead people who supposedly had died from STD's, not that it's likely. |

Sure people claim that some for example cigarette adverts are aimed at children, but they still need adults to buy said cigarettes for them. Anyone beyond the age of about 12 should be able to make up their own mind on things. |

Age: 32 Gender: Female Posts: 9656 | June 29th, 2007 at 06:45pm We can't really escape from advertising :/ I mean, in a way, even wearing a band t-shirt is advertising, although I suppose it's the person's choice whether they wear it. It kinda depends what context or situation it's in to decide whether advertising is good or bad. |

It kinda depends what context or situation it's in to decide whether advertising is good or bad. That's where subculture comes in, take the case from the punk days of lore, the shop 'Sex' run by Vivienne Westwood, Malcolm McLaren, and Bernie Rhodes. The ultimate no logo, no brand clothing store. Worn by the few, true punks. Then one day, 'Nevermind the bollocks, here's the Sex Pistols' who are advertising the newest, fab, spring line shirts a la 'Sex' shop. Now everyone wants to dress like them, to look like them, to be like them. Other clothing companies cash in on the 'punk' craze. Now everyone's wearing the same thing, everyone looks the same, everyone is the same. It's what makes money pass hands, what helps businesses earn money.
So there has to continually be new trends in order for them to be trendy, they need to be advertised, and for the advertisements to work, people have got to spend money on those products. It's ugly, but essential. |
