Just One Taste

Let me swallow you whole
(starting with those world-worn,
mud-trodden, kiss me tender eyes),
say I can taste every putrid
drop of who you are.

Starting at the centre
of your smile, I'll
work my way
down
wards;

absorb every hit of charisma and
the pungent after-tastes of doubt,
every pretended little nothing
that's really something (but
you'll never admit it is) -

the tepid fear that hides
between each grain of resolution
and the scars that beat below
the surface (around which
these lips would never fit).

I'll trace my tastebuds
around those moonlit thoughts,
drown myself in nightmares
so macabre and anaemic
they have no end

(and maybe, as I reach the core,
I'll hit the key of you, which
rings as bright as childhood).
