 | May 26th, 2008 at 09:13pm Hey zup people who can play instraments
k so about a year ago i took guitar lessons but i quit after a while cuz i wasn't really into it. However now I like to mess around on it and I wish i hadn't quit. But the thing is i am not good at learning stuff in the way with people watching me and telling me what to do, i'm better at figureing stuff out myself. So i was wondering if it whould be possible for me to like teach it to myself reading tabs and stuff? Or do you reccomend a get a teacher person? |

If you really can't learn with a teacher, then yeah, you can teach yourself. It's just more difficult, and you have to be much more dedicated.
Tabs are easy to read. You can figure songs out easily. There's plenty of online lessons and articles and stuff (try ultimate-guitar.com for tabs and lessons and stuff). |

 | May 27th, 2008 at 09:41am I'm pretty much self taught electric guitar wise. I took lessons for a long time but it was always acoustic, and always rhythm. As such, I'm taking tutoring now and I'm already getting heaps better with my lead skills. |

You could be doing all sorts of long term damage to your hands if you develop poor technique and won't be able to tell what you're doing wrong if an experienced player doesn't tell you. |

 | July 24th, 2008 at 03:03pm I learned by myself, and my hands are fine.
I think it all depends on whether or not you have an ear for music. |

 | July 25th, 2008 at 11:30am Do not teach yourself how to play the guitar. I took lessons at a music store and also got more help from my dad. |

I didn't teach myself how to play the guitar though, but my teacher is self-taught.
And he can play just fine.
Sure,it's way easier if you take lessons, but if you really want to,you can teach yourself. |

 | October 29th, 2009 at 02:56pm It is possible but I would suggest you get lessons because I tried to teach myself about two years ago but I failed because I didn't practice and then I talked to my parents about lessons and they agreed so I got lessons. |

 | November 4th, 2009 at 08:20am After my dad showed me how to play E A and D about 5 years ago I can honestly say I've never had any lessons.
You just need the commitment and the resolve to actually achieve something. The first 6 months are the hardest because you feel like you're not actually getting anywhere. But believe me, its worth putting in the hard work and effort in those first few months, because at least then you'll be of a decent standard.
Never think you know enough though, because even the greatest guitarists are still experimenting and learning new things. |

Lessons definately helped me personally, but I don't have the time to commit lately, so I think it'll be easier to go it alone for now. |

 | December 9th, 2009 at 12:36pm I learnt how to play, read music and read tabs on my acoustic guitar. Now that I have my electric I play just fine.
I don't have anything wrong with my hands, and a lot of famous guitarist never had lessons.
However, I now want to expand what I know so I am currently going to this guitar group once every two weeks that is helping me aswell.
That was more of a ramble. But I just wanted to say that it can be done. |

A good half of them took lessons and the other half taught themselves.
The group that taught themselves are waaaaay better and practice heaps more than the one's who are teacher taught :/
I dont see any problem teaching yourself and getting help from others/teachers/online videos/books/etc. |

Age: - Gender: Male Posts: 12 | March 14th, 2013 at 02:18pm Of course its possible. I had acoustic guitar lessons for a few years and that taught me a lot, until my teacher moved. I then used tabs online and have improved a lot. Green Day taught me how to be an amazing guitarist. I have improved so much since i taught myself. |
