What Really Goes On In Billie Joe's Head, chapter 50

"That's what paparazzi can do these days," said Tre.
Adie came out of our room.
"What's all this noise about?" she asked.
Tre showed her the picture and what it said. Adie grimaced.
"That's not good," said Adie.
"Well anyways, can you help me tie on my dress?"
"Sure," I said as I went behind her and took hold of the fabric.
I fumbled with it and tried to tie it into a bow.
"Here, lemme help," said Tre as he took hold of the fabric in my hands.
He tied a perfect bow and straightened it.
"There you go," he said to Adie.
"Thanks," she replied.
I stepped back and looked at her dress.
"I haven't seen this one before.." I said.
"Do you like? I bought it at the mall," said Adie as she turned herself around.
It was a red halter dress with a several black outlines of flowers on it. She was also wearing a red silk choker.
"It's nice," I said.
"Erm..you ready Tre?" I asked.
"Yeah," "Do you want me to straighten up your hair?" I asked.
"What? Is it crooked?" asked Tre as he touched his hair.
"A little bit," I said.
"Sure." I led Tre to the bathroom and looked at him through the mirror.
I rubbed some gel into my fingers and made his bangs stick up straight.
"There you go," I said.
Tre nodded.
"Let's go, it takes about an hour to get there and it's 10:45 right now," said Adie as she popped her head into the bathroom.
I tied on my battered converse and took Adie's arm in mine as Tre walked beside us. We met everyone else at the lobby.
"Where's Katie?" asked Mike.
Tre looked down.
"Well she-" I started.
"She left. We broke up," finished Tre.
"Oooh..That must be hard for you," said Mike.
"Yeah, but I'm gonna live," said Tre.
I smiled at him. He smiled back.
Mike was quiet on the way to the party. He looked very stiff and occasionally cleared his throat. Sarah didn't say anything either and just clinged onto Mike's arm.
Tre made a several attempts to start a conversation.
"So...Did you see Adie's new dress?" asked Tre.
"Yes, I see it right now," answered Sarah.
Then it was quiet again. Tre leaned back.
I felt Adie rest her hand on my lap.
It was then I remembered all that Tre had done for me. After all, he and Mike brought Adie all the way to California to meet me again. Whenever I'm down, Tre's there. If Tre wasn't here, all of this wouldn't have happened. We would've never gotten big and I wouldn't have met Adie for the first time.
I wouldn't be here right now, riding a limo with Adie next to me.
"Hey, I asked you a question," said Adie as she shook me.
"Huh? Oh..What?"
"Nothing.."
"What?"
"Just seeing if you were awake," said Adie.
I looked out my window. Flashing lights were everywhere and glowing pictures of flamingos decorated the sky. There was booming music coming from a club nearby.
"Do you know what kind of show this is?" I asked Adie.
"Uuuh...It's kind of like a musical with dancing people in it," said Adie.
"Oooh, I love musicals!" exclaimed Mike.
I sighed. It was quiet again.
"Hey, check this out," said Tre as he rolled down a window. There were a several girls around the corner.
Tre winked at them. They all pointed and eventually started screaming. Tre rolled the window back up.
"Yeahh," said Tre.
I stared at him for a while.
"Ooooh! I get it..." said Mike as he started laughing.
I stared at him for a while longer while Mike and the rest started laughing. I cocked my head.
I thought for a while. Finally, after about a decade, I got it. Tre was doing a comical imitaion of Usher in that show, Mtv Diaries. I started laughing. Everyone else stopped laughing by then.
"What's wrong with you, Billie Joe? You're usually not slow," said Adie.
"I don't know what's happening to me," I answered.
I rubbed my eyes. I had forgotten to put on some eyeliner.
"Adie, Do you have any eyeliner with you?" I asked.
"Uh wait a sec," said Adie as she shifted things around in her purse. She took out an eyeliner pencil.
"It's all I've got," she said as she shrugged.
